The One Who Got Away
Thank you @kyra75 for your ask --  Prompt #4, ‘This is all my fault’ for @choicesprompts – Angstgiving Event
Choices Book: The Royal Romance, Book 2
Pairing: Liam Rys x Riley Brooks (F!MC)
Rating: mature
Category: angst/fluff, one-shot, ask/prompt
Words 3.5k, with sprinkles of Canon
A/N1: not Beta’d, please excuse all errors
Premise: Liam and Riley are in love, but due to circumstances, they are pulled apart. Riley leaves Cordonia to go back home to New York, heartbroken. Liam marries Madeleine, reluctantly, to fulfill his duty as King. A year later, while visiting New York, Liam runs into Riley....
ONE YEAR AGO ...
New York. The place where dreams come true. The Statue of Liberty. The Empire State Building. Central Park.
As the limousine pulled up in front of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a sea of reporters and cameras flooded the sidewalk, all desperate to catch a glimpse of the young King of Cordonia.
He'd arrived in New York earlier that day to spend the next two weeks on a goodwill tour, courtesy of his PR team. He'd already spent several days in Washington, DC, before stopping by a few other major US cities. New York City was the grand finale.
King Liam stepped out of the limousine, his personal security flanking him, and walked into the throng of reporters. He was met with a barrage of flashing cameras, blinding him. His bodyguards tried their best to hold the crowd back.
"Your Majesty! Over here! Look over here, please!"
Liam put on his most dazzling smile and waved, walking towards the doors, surrounded by the press.
"What are you hoping to accomplish during your stay in New York?"
"Who will be accompanying you?"
"Do you have a message for the people of Cordonia?"
"King Liam! What is the state of the relationship between your country and the US?"
"Will you be making any important announcements soon?"
Liam smiled politely at the reporters, but refused to comment on their questions. He reached the top of the steps leading into the museum, and stopped for a moment, taking in the view. It was a gorgeous, but chilly,  November day in New York. The trees had long since lost their leaves and were now a dark brown, contrasting with the gray skies above. The weather had forced most New Yorkers to stay indoors.
Liam glanced at his watch. It was 10:45 am.
"Your Majesty? The exhibit is waiting for you." One of the museum staff motioned him inside.
Liam walked through the massive, imposing entrance doors and made his way through the crowd of museum visitors, down the marble-floored hallway, towards the room where the exhibit was waiting for him.
The museum staff, dressed in black-and-white, were all huddled near the door, whispering excitedly amongst themselves.
"This is going to be a huge draw for our museum."
"I can't believe they let us borrow these artifacts."
"We're lucky the King agreed to open the exhibit."
Liam cleared his throat and the museum staff immediately stood at attention.
"Welcome, Your Majesty. We're honored you're here," the museum director bowed in respect.
"Thank you, but there's no need for all the formality," Liam smiled warmly. "Please, please call me Liam."
The museum staff beamed as the director held out his arm to escort Liam into the gallery.
"If you'll please follow me, Your Ma—, uh, Liam. We've prepared the exhibit for your inspection. Please take as much time as you'd like."
Liam followed into the spacious, exhibition room, his personal security standing outside. The staff were bustling around, checking the artifacts and displays. Liam took a few steps further into the room, and his breath hitched in his throat.
At the end of the room, on a plinth, was a large display case, with a crown encased inside. It was a golden circlet, embellished with rubies, sapphires, and emeralds.
The Queen's Crown of Cordonia.
He recognized it immediately. It had belonged to his mother, Queen Eleanor, before she had died. She had never had a chance to wear it.
Liam's hands were trembling, and his knees were weak. He slowly approached the crown, his eyes fixed on it. The last time he'd seen this crown was at his mother's funeral. After that, it had been kept locked away in the Royal Treasury. He'd thought it would stay there forever.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" came a familiar voice.
Liam's head snapped up and his heart skipped a beat.
There, standing in front of him, was the love of his life.
Riley.
He couldn't believe his eyes. What was she doing here?
"Riley," Liam gasped, taking a few shaky steps towards her.
They stood inches from each other, but neither could make a move. There were a million thoughts running through each of their minds, but they couldn't utter a single word.
"You look stunning," Liam finally said, breaking the silence.
Riley blushed. "I didn't realize you'd personally be here."
"My PR team set up this visit."  Liam softly spoke.
"I'm glad they did." Riley nervously responded.
They both stood in silence, staring at each other.
Liam took a step closer and reached for her hand.
"I've missed you," he whispered.
"Me too," Riley replied, squeezing his hand.
They gazed into each other's eyes, their hearts filled with longing and desire; even after all the time apart.
"Liam, I..." Riley started to say.
"What is it, Riley?"
"Nothing. It's just...I'm happy to see you."
"I'm happy to see you, too," Liam said. "And I'm sorry, about everything."
"It wasn't your fault." Looking down, Riley shook her head.
"Yes, it was. I should've done more. I should've fought harder. This is all my fault"
"No. Liam, don't blame yourself."
"But I do."
Moving their conversation to a secluded alcove, Riley placed her hands on his cheeks. "None of this was your fault. You did the right thing. And you're an amazing King. You're the best King Cordonia has ever had. You made the right decision."
"But I lost you."
"It was my choice, Liam. I chose to walk away. I chose to leave."
"Why?" Liam searched Riley's eyes for an answer.
"Because I knew you would never choose me over your duty. And I would've never forgiven myself if I forced you to make that choice. That would've been too selfish of me. You were always going to make the right decision for your country. And that's what made me fall in love with you."
"Riley, I—"
"Wait, Liam, before you say anything... there's something I need to tell you. It's important."
Liam frowned. "What is it?"
Riley hesitated for a moment, then looked up into his eyes. Closing her eyes, her heart was pounding inside her chest. "I was pregnant."
The color drained from Liam's face. He stared at her in shock. "What did you just say?"  Liam didn't trust his hearing.
"I was pregnant, with our baby. I found out right after the coronation."
Liam couldn't believe what he was hearing, shaking his head, no. He was completely stunned. He couldn't speak.
"I didn't know how to tell you," Riley continued. "So I didn't. I was afraid of what you'd say. Of how you'd react. I didn't want to ruin your life. So I kept it a secret."
"Riley, why didn't you tell me?" Liam asked, his voice hoarse.
"I don't know. I guess I was scared. Scared of what you'd think. Scared that you'd hate me. I'm sorry, Liam. I should've told you. But I didn't want to put you in a difficult position. I didn't want to force you to make a choice. That's why I left. I knew that if I told you, you'd try to figure something out, and I couldn't let that happen. Not when the future of your kingdom was at stake."
Liam was speechless. His heart was pounding.
"I didn't want to ruin your life," Riley said again, her voice breaking. "It was all my fault."
"How could you say that? Riley?" Liam was heartbroken.
"What do you mean? It was my fault. I was the one who got pregnant. I was the one who kept it a secret. I was the one who left."  Riley covered her face with her shaking hands.
"No. Riley, it's not your fault. It was my mine. I should've protected you. I should've done more. But instead, I failed you. I'm so sorry, Riley."
Riley shook her head. "No. Liam, don't. Please don't. It's not your fault."
Liam wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. "It's okay, Riley. It's okay. I'm here. I'm not going anywhere. I'm not leaving you. Not ever."
[present day]
Liam's eyes slowly opened and he was greeted with the sight of his sleeping wife. He was lying on his side, facing her, his arm draped over her waist. She looked peaceful. Her hair was splayed across the pillow and her lips were slightly parted.
Liam gently brushed a strand of hair from her face. She stirred a little, but didn't wake up.
He smiled to himself.
They were together. They had another baby on the way. He'd done the right thing.
His kingdom would be safe. His people would be safe. His family would be safe.
Everything was going to be all right.
And yet, he couldn't help but wonder what might have been. If he had known Riley was pregnant; when she had left after the coronation... would things have turned out differently? Would they have chosen a different path? Would he have married Riley instead of Madeleine? Scandal be damned.
Or would the same thing have happened? Would he have still made the same decision, to choose his kingdom over his heart?
It was too late to find out.
He couldn't go back.
He didn't have to.

Savage Love Chapter 39: We Have a Plan
Series: Savage Love
Fandom: The Royal Romance
Pairings: Riley x Liam, Riley x Drake
Rating: R
Warnings: Mature themes
Word Count: 3,094
My other stuff: Master List.
Tumblr media
Naked, and still struggling to catch my breath, I glanced up at the man I’d just agreed to marry.
Liam stared down at me with such utter devotion in his gaze that it sent butterflies exploding through me.
It also terrified me.
There had been no romantic proposal or declaration of undying love.
I had agreed to marry him to keep him alive. Our discussion about how that would work and what it would look like had been interrupted by a vigorous bout of lovemaking when the electricity that always snapped between us exploded, the potent mix of physical passion and intense emotion as we danced around the topic of my unspoken feelings for him cumulating in the physical expression of everything that I could not bring myself to express verbally.
Not yet.
I needed to ensure his survival first.
“Move into my room.”
“I don’t know if that’s the best idea…”
“Why not? You spend almost every other night in here, anyway.”
“That’s true, but…”
The knowledge that the rest of those nights were spent with Drake hung in the air between us.
He rolled off me and sat up, swinging his legs off the edge of the bed. “I’m not asking you to end your relationship with Drake. Just so we’re clear.”
“No?”
He turned his head back to make direct eye contact as he answered. “No.”
I found nothing but sincerity in his determined gaze. “Even after we’re married?”
“Even after.”
“Really?” I raised my eyebrows skeptically.
“Really.” He fixed me with a determined gaze. “We have a thing here called a Cordonian Arrangement. It’s an official codicil to the marriage contract that allows for an open relationship with no negative consequences to either party in the event of a divorce.”
“And you’d agree to that?”
“Of course, I would. I want you to be happy. I want Drake to be happy. I want to be happy. This seems like the best way to accomplish all of those goals.”
I stared at him for several heartbeats as I took that in. Then I nodded. “All right.”
The weight of the crown dropped away from his expression as that boyish grin I first saw in New York appeared. “Alright, you’ll move in with me?”
“I’ll consider it,” I told him as I got up and started collecting my clothes.
“Do you really have to rush off? We could order some food and—”
“I think you know that I have to go talk to Drake now. He can’t find out about our plan from anyone else.”
“Yes, I understand.” He ran a hand along his jawline with a sigh. “Listen. I know this isn’t a traditional love story. I know you’re only marrying me to keep me safe.”
I turned to eye him suspiciously because I could hear the “but” in his voice. “But?”
He rewarded me with that smile that could light the entire country. “But you do love me, or you would leave safeguarding my life to the Kings Guard.”
I felt dismay sweep through me. “Liam, this isn’t some fairy tale where love conquers all.”
“Isn’t it?” He stood and took my hand. “All I’m saying is that it’s okay if you don’t say it out loud. I love you and I’ll say it enough for both of us.”
“Liam…” He deserved to have someone tell him they loved him. He deserved to be told how amazing he was. He deserved all the romance and the fairy tale ending.
“It’s okay, Riley, I get it. Catch the bad guys first. Romance later. Go. I have things I need to be doing, anyway. We’ll talk tomorrow.”
I didn’t have to go far. Drake’s room was just down the hall from Liam’s. He opened the door, surprise and happiness lighting his features when he saw me. “Riley! Come in!”
I walked into the room and straight into his arms. He wrapped me in a tight embrace and buried his nose in my hair. “Damn, I missed you.”
“It’s only been two days,” I laughed.
“That’s two days too many.” His arms tightened around me before dropping away. “Now, tell me about Hidar.”
“I’ll tell you everything, but first I want to know how you’re handling the news about having a sister you never knew existed.”
“I….” he looked lost, an expression I’d never seen on his face before. With a great sigh, he raked a hand through his hair and shook his head. “It’s a lot. I mean… do I tell my mom? Does she already know? I have no idea how I’m supposed to approach this.”
“Hey.” I took his hand in mine. “You don’t have to figure it out alone, okay?”
“Thank you.” He squeezed my palm. “Having you on my side means a lot to me.”
I returned the squeeze with a smile. “Always.” I realized with sudden clarity that I meant that. I wanted to be there for him as much as I wanted to be there for Liam. My determination to leave after wrapping the case up had been slowly dwindling, day by day, without me even noticing.
He looked like he wanted to say something more, but after a brief hesitation, he released my hand and gestured to the couch. “Please, have a seat and tell me how the mission went.”
We exchanged details of our respective missions. Drake ended his story by expressing frustration with Nick. “It’s like he didn’t even care that Rico got away!”
“Well, he accomplished his goal, and that’s all that matters to him.”
Drake looked at me in astonishment. “He loved you, Riley. Maybe still does. How can he not care about the threat to your life?”
“I’m not sure he loved me as much as he loved the idea of having a wife and a family. He projected a lot of shit onto me that was never actually about me.”
Drake nodded. “Yeah, I got that from my conversation with him.”
“Oh?” The corners of my lips quirked up. “You discussed me with him?”
“No!” His eyes widened in panic for a second, and then he blew out a loud breath. “Okay, yeah, I did.”
“It’s okay,” I laughed. “I would have done the same thing in your place.”
He brightened at that confession. “Yeah?”
I bumped him with my shoulder. “Yeah.”
He was silent for a long moment as he pinched the skin between his thumb and index finger on his left hand with his right hand, a gesture I’d come to associate with nervousness on his part.
“What is it?” I prompted.
“It’s just that there’s only a few days left in the social season and—”
“Yes, I wanted to talk to you about that.” I interrupted him. If he were about to make some declaration of love or beg me to stay, I needed to stop him. It was now a moot point. “I’m not leaving at the end of the social season.”
I don’t think he could have looked more surprised if an alien had just landed on the front lawn. It took him a few seconds to collect himself. His gaze pierced me to my very soul. “I’m not complaining about you hanging around longer, but why? What’s changed?”
“The mission has expanded.”
“In what way?”
“I think we can take the whole thing down. And it’s imperative that we do.”
“Why is that?”
“You have to realize by now that even if we take down the local faction, Liam will still be in danger. Via Imperii leadership wants Cordonia’s coffers.”
“We’ll up our border security. Make it harder for them to get a foothold here again—”
“We have to take down the whole thing. It’s the only way to keep Liam safe.”
“Okay….” He studied me carefully, trying to figure out where this was going. “I’m not disagreeing, but unless I’m missing something, we don’t have what we need to take the whole thing down and he’s going to be in danger from the local faction the moment he chooses anyone other than Madeleine at the selection ceremony. So that’s the biggest, most immediate threat. Taking them down will keep him safe for now and give us time to figure out how to counteract any future threats.”
“I have a plan for that. I know how to keep him safe from the local faction and buy us time to take down the whole thing.”
“How?”
“Simple. I’m going to marry him.”
“What?” Shock flashed across his face, followed by anger as he jumped up from his seat and thundered, “The fucking hell you are!”
I followed him to my feet. I locked my jaw and thrust my chin out defiantly as I tried to make him understand. “Drake. Listen. He has to pick a wife in less than a week! He won’t choose Madeleine. If he picks anyone other than her or me, they’re going to kill him!”
“They’re going to try—”
I arched an eyebrow at him. “And you’re okay with that?”
“Of course not! But—”
“But nothing! If we don’t take down the whole thing, then all we’re doing is postponing it. The Via Imperii will eventually regain a foothold in Cordonia. If he marries me, it buys us the time we need to take the entire thing down. It’s the only way to keep him safe and you know it.”
“We could—” he paused, his expression making it obvious that he was spinning through scenarios in his head. “Or maybe….. If we…. Okay, what if…. fuck!”
Bingo. The moment he realized I was right.
He stared at me with desperation in his eyes. “There has to be another way!”
“There’s not.” I knew it. He knew it.
His shoulders slumped in defeat. “What does this mean for us?”
“Nothing,” I assured him as I stepped closer and took his hands in mine. “I’m marrying him to keep him safe. He’s already agreed to a Cordonian Arrangement.”
The desperation in his eyes was replaced with a sliver of hope. “So, does this mean that you’re staying at court after the case wraps up?”
“What?”
“Surely you know that the moment your picture is plastered in newspapers all over the world as the future Queen of Cordonia, your career in the GIA is over. Have you thought about that?”
“Of course I’ve thought about it! It’s all I’ve thought about since I opened my big mouth and blurted it out!”
“You can take it back....”
“I can’t... and I don’t think I want to.”
“Do you…. Love him?”
I could tell how hard it was for him to ask that question, and I knew that the question he really wanted to ask wasn’t if I loved Liam, but if I loved him.
It was time for me to stop being a coward and face my feelings.
I reached up and touched his face as I answered. “This is a complicated situation. I have feelings for both of you that I never saw coming. Liam seems genuinely okay with me having a relationship with both of you. How do you feel about that?”
Of all the reactions I had expected at this moment, amusement wasn’t one of them.
He grinned at me with nothing but happiness shining from his eyes. “Did you just admit to having feelings for me?”
A sound that was half laugh and half scoff escaped me. “That’s what you got out of that?”
He grabbed me around the waist and tugged me closer. “That’s the important part!”
Then he was kissing me and every question I had was answered, every doubt erased.
“Mm-hm,” I murmured as I leaned into him.
We both moved our bodies closer to the other. His hands caressed my face and shoulders. His fingers traced down my back as mine threaded through his hair. He released my lips so he could nip and lick along my collarbone. I arched my body into him in encouragement.
His phone chimed, and he froze. “Shit!” He rested his forehead against mine as he expressed a few colorful opinions about the interruption and the character of his commanding officer.
“It’s okay, I have a couple of phone calls to make anyway,” I told him as I struggled to disentangle myself from him. “We can continue this later.”
“Continuing this is the only thing on my priority list,” He assured me as he returned the text.
“Don’t let your boss hear you say that!”
“I don’t give a damn who hears it!” He returned his phone to his pocket and lunged at me for one last kiss before hurrying out the door to a meeting that I had made him late for.
Alone in his room, I decided there was no time like the present. I took a deep breath as I punched in the familiar phone number.
My boss wasn’t as understanding as Drake had been. “I understand your concerns, Agent Brooks, but the social season ends in four days! We have everything we need to take down the Cordonian branch right now.”
“I need just a little more time and we can take down the whole thing! Isn’t that what we’re all about? Taking down the bad guys?”
“Of course. But once the social season is over, you’ll have no more reason to remain in Cordonia. You’ll have no cover.”
“Oh, I will.”
“I’m listening.”
I filled her in on my plan. She was less than thrilled with my ideas, to put it mildly. “Absolutely not!”
“If you’ll calm down—”
“Don’t tell me to calm down! I’m telling you no! You cannot marry him for the love of God!”
“Why not?”
“You know why not! Right now, the social season is just local news. An engagement will be bigger news, and an actual royal wedding will be broadcast across the globe! You’ll be compromised! Your face will be splashed on newspapers everywhere! You’ll be worthless as an agent!”
“That’s not true—”
“It is true! You’ll be too recognizable to work undercover.”
“Are you saying you’d fire me?”
“I’m saying, at the very least, we’d have to pull you from fieldwork. We can’t, and we won’t, send a compromised agent into the field. Not only would it compromise you, but it would also endanger every agent working with you and you know it! We won’t allow that, and neither will any other agency. You do this, and your career is over, at least as a field agent.”
“It’s the only way to keep him safe and infiltrate Via Imperii leadership.”
“Brooks, I mean it, do not do this!”
“I’m doing it. So, tell the team to stand down. Please! If you take down the local branch, my cover is blown. I’m marrying him, regardless. You may as well take the win I’m offering you. I can deliver the entire organization. Give me another week.”
Barton was silent for so long that I thought the connection had been lost. Defeat and a note of awe were in her voice when she finally answered. “Fine. One more week. I never thought I’d see the day Riley Brooks leveraged her career over a man.”
“It’s the only way to keep him safe long enough to get what I need to take down the Via Imperii.”
“Right.” I could hear the smirk in her voice from across the Atlantic. “That’s your only concern.”
I chose to let that go and thanked her for giving me another week. It should be all I needed. It had to be all I needed because Rico was still out there somewhere and the moment the engagement was announced, there was nothing stopping him from leaking my actual job to the press. We needed to be ready to breach within hours of the announcement. Preferably before.
Fortunately, my impending engagement to Liam also gave me the bargaining chip I needed to infiltrate the highest level of the Via Imperii.
I lifted the phone that was still in my hand and dialed Sigrid’s direct line. She sounded both annoyed and impressed. “How did you get my private number?”
“Did you forget who my aunt is?”
“What do you want?”
“I wanted to let you know that though it won’t be official until the selection ceremony, Liam has gotten down on one knee and proposed to me.” I crossed my legs as I spoke, getting into character. I let the entitlement drip off my words. “You should see the diamond. It’s exquisite!”
That piqued her interest. “Forget the diamond, have you seen the marriage contract?”
“I’m holding it in my hands right now.” I lied.
“How much access does it give you to the finances?”
“Plenty.”
“How much influence does it give you over policy decisions?”
“Liam is still the monarch with final decision making power on everything. But don’t worry, I can sway his decisions in the correct direction.”
“You’re very confident in yourself.”
“I am.”
“I hope it’s well founded confidence.”
“It is. But as you know, Liam is very devoted to the people of Cordonia, so swaying him to see our side of things is going to take a little effort. I’m up for the job, but I need to know what I’m getting out of it.”
I could hear the suspicion dripping like venom from her words. “What do you mean?”
“I mean…” I paused for dramatic effect. “If you want access to Cordonia’s bottomless coffers, I need something in return.”
“You’re already a member in good standing. What more do you want?”
“This is a lot of money we’re talking about. I want some input into how it’s spent. I think that’s reasonable.”
“You want a leadership position.” I heard the surprise in her tone, tinged with a hint of awe.
She had underestimated me.
“I do.”
“And what makes you think I’m in a position to make that happen?”
“Come on, Sigrid, there’s no way that a woman as driven and intelligent as you isn’t in the upper echelons of this thing. Do you really expect me to believe that you’re bowing down to someone like Eirik Midsommar?”
There was a long pause as she considered how much to trust me. I had appealed to her ego, and it worked “Fine. I’ll set everything up. Be here in two days, with the signed and notarized marriage contract in your hands, and we’ll talk.”
“Great. See you in two days.”
She hung up on me without saying goodbye. I didn’t care. Everything was falling perfectly into place.

After quickly unpacking a few of her belongings, Riley made her way out of her assigned room on a mission to explore the palace boutique’s options. Luckily for her, Maxwell had told her that the store was located on the ground floor near the front entrance.
A few minutes later, Riley pushed past the doors into the boutique. The soft pink walls contrasted nicely with the brown mahogany floors and the light gray floor rug covering the entire ground. A silver chandelier with bell-shaped glass shades hung directly in the middle of the room. Several mannequins dressed in various formal attire for men and women were scattered across the rooms.
Absentmindedly, Riley brushed her hand against the silk and satin dresses placed on one of many racks on display. The closest she had ever gotten to seeing such beautiful formal dresses was outside display windows of luxury stores on her way to school and work.
“Oh!” A girl yelped out, stepping out of a changing room and holding a dress.
Startled with the sudden voice, Riley looked over her shoulder to see who it was. However, when she noticed that the girl was only dressed in her underwear, Riley quickly turned back around. While she felt a hint of excitement to meet new people up close and personal, this wasn’t exactly what she had in mind.
“Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry!” Riley apologized, feeling embarrassed at seeing a stranger looking so vulnerable. “I didn’t realize someone was already here. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have just barged in.”
With Riley’s back turned, the girl quickly draped the curtain of the changing room over her body to cover herself. Only her head poked out, a sign she was eager to invite Riley into a conversation.
“Oh, it’s no problem at all. To be honest, I didn’t have an appointment. I forgot to book one before my flight landed a few hours ago but thought I would peruse down here before it became too crowded,” the girl sheepishly replied, making Riley turn around to see her friendly smile. “I’m Hana. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
Pleasantly surprised with the girl’s bright kindness to a stranger like her, Riley gave a smile in return. “You too. My name’s Riley.”
“I suppose you’re also here to prepare for the Masquerade tonight,” Hana replied, before disappearing behind the curtain to pull on the dress she was holding. “Since you’re here and not already dressed, I must assume that you’re just like me… searching desperately for something to wear.”
“More or less,” Riley replied, with a relaxed laugh. Her neck craned around to catch short glimpses of the dresses in the boutique, wondering how on earth she would be able to narrow it down with the surprising variety.
“The seamstress seems to be running late, but I can show you around! The boutique has the most exquisite gowns. Quite a few of them were shipped just this morning,” Hana answered, pulling the curtain to the side. “Let me just zip this dress up and we can look for one for you!”
Walking to a floor-length mirror, Hana faced her reflection to note her appearance. There was an immense amount of pressure on her from her parents to make a good first impression on the nobility during the court’s social season. She took a deep breath, examining the rose gold laced bodice with rhinestones and a matching floor-length satin skirt.
Her hands arched around her back, trying to get a firm grasp on the tiny zipper. Replaying her parents’ never-ending lectures in her mind about securing the hand of the prince, she felt a slight tremble in her grip and found herself unable to zip herself in the dress. What was she going to do if she failed to secure his attention?
“Need a hand?” Riley offered, admiring how confident and poised Hana looked in front of the mirror with her masquerade outfit.
With a relieved laugh, Hana answered, “That would be amazing.”
Making her way behind Hana, Riley grasped hold of the zipper and slid it all the way up. On a nearby side table, Hana picked up a salmon pink mask with gold accents that matched her dress perfectly. She carefully settled it on her face, making her happily sigh with a satisfied smile.
Turning to face Riley with a grin, Hana complimented, “Thank you. It’s a pity that not many girls here are like you.”
“Helpful?” Riley asked, a smile on her face at Hana’s comment.
“Genuinely nice,” Hana explained, with a simple knowing nod. “It would make the social season much less intimidating if we were here to converse as ladies instead of constantly viewing each other as competition.”
If Drake was right about the ruthlessness of noble ladies, it seemed Riley had found a rare ally in her. Unbeknownst to her, Hana held the same sentiments. Most ladies would secretly turn their noses up at her out of jealousy, let alone help her—something Hana was used to growing up as a noble.
Hana spun for Riley, her full skirts twirling as she giggled. “Ah, this dress is perfect! Now, what about you? One must have a mask for the Masquerade!”The two girls perused through racks of dresses, holding up possible options to the other for a second opinion. Ten minutes later, Hana’s eyes widened in excitement as she pulled two garment bags from a rack. “Have you seen the angel costume? You’d look amazing in white,” Hana suggested, eagerly holding up the white dress in her right hand and the other dress in her left hand. “Or there’s also a red one, if you’re feeling more devilish.”
“I’ll take a look.” Riley giggled, as Hana handed her both garment bags.
Inside a dressing room, Riley eyed the first costume meant to resemble a sultry devil. The crimson red colour of the strapless dress was striking along with sections made of mesh lace fabric highlighting embroidered patterns. Along with the dress were two devil horn accessories and a bold black mask with sparkling rhinestones.
Ultimately, Riley decided on the angel costume that Hana first suggested. It was much simpler with its draped off shoulder straps, a sweetheart neckline, and a shimmery sparkle that brightened the pure white colour. After stepping out of the changing room, Riley fixed the matching halo accessory on top of her head and plucked a detailed silver mask off of the table.
“How do I look?” Riley asked with a smile, giving a little twirl similar to the one Hana had done moments ago.
Hana’s face brightened up, as she grinned and the two made their way out of the boutique. “Heavenly! A costume as angelic as the girl wearing it.”

Rhonda led the three of them along the path to the west grounds. At one point, that is where all major events were held in Applewood. However, over the years, the Royal family decided it was best to move all festivities to the front of the estate, as it was bigger in acres and much closer to the main building.
The area was then practically forgotten about. There was housing for some of the staff, a couple of sheds, and a few stray apple trees, but nothing else. Liam hadn't been on the west grounds specifically since he was a child and would play hide and seek with Leo out there. He always found the best spots to hide, Leo practically never found him.
They followed until Rhonda stopped at an older, weathered shed toward the edge of the estate property. It appeared to be practically abandoned; the paint was chipping off the sides and the roof missed several shingles. It looked like a scene from a horror movie, and Liam felt his skin turn cold and raise with goosebumps as they approached the structure.
Rhonda turned to face them. "This is the one..."
"Don't you dare go anywhere? Do you understand me?" Liam growled.
Rhonda didn't say a word but nodded her head rapidly. She took a few steps away but stood where they could see her even after they entered the structure.
Olivia glanced down and saw a padlock securing the doors closed. She reached out and grabbed it. "A lock? Seems like someone doesn't want us to find what's in there."
"How are we gonna get it open?" Drake asked.
Olivia laughed before she responded, "Oh, don’t you worry about that, you simpleton." and pulled a small dagger out of her sleeve. She leaned forward and started working the blade into the keyhole.
After a couple of minutes, Drake grew restless. "I know this may come as a surprise to you, but not everything is solved with knives." He huffed.
Just as the words left his mouth, Olivia stood and turned to face him with a smirk on her face, lock in hand. "You were saying?" Drake shook his head and muttered a few obscenities under his breath.
The trio stood and stared at the doors for what felt like an eternity; nobody wanted to make that first move. After so long with so many unanswered questions, the anxiety of what could lie ahead was felt heavily by all three.
Finally, Olivia reached for the door and swung it open. They were indeed looking at all of Riley's stuff; all her clothes, hygiene products, knick-knacks, everything was piled directly in front of them. Olivia entered first and started searching for anything of relevance. Drake followed close behind, but Liam remained cemented in place with his mouth agape.
Liam convinced himself that Riley intentionally left because she took all of her belongings with her. To him, that meant her departure was premeditated; she had to have thought enough in advance to have her things packed so she could make her escape.
But as Liam stood in front of the open shed, he confirmed the gut feeling he had been ignoring all along was validated. Any and every bit of resolve he had left crumpled as he took those first steps into the structure before him.
Liam entered slowly and looked around. He stopped when he saw Riley’s ceramic cardinal and picked it up. She said it reminded her of her grandfather who had passed away, so having it meant he was exploring new horizons with her. She had the trinket in her pocket during the Regatta, Liam recalled her telling him her grandfather had a love of boats, so she had to bring it with her for the day. He held it in his hands for a moment before he gently squeezed it, and placed it back where he found it.
Liam continued his search and stumbled upon her tortilla blanket; he smiled as he picked it up and held it to his nose to inhale a deep breath. He hadn’t understood why Riley had such a random item, but he didn’t dare question her. The one time he saw her wrapped up in it was one of the most beautiful things he had ever seen.
Liam went to her door early one morning to escort her to breakfast, however, Riley wasn't expecting him. He knew it wasn't proper, but he couldn't help himself; he wanted to spend any and every spare second he had with her.
When Riley answered the door, she was wrapped in her blanket with her glasses sliding down her nose; her hair sat piled on the top of her head in a messy bun, although it appeared to have shifted more to the side during her slumber. The smile she gave as her cheeks flushed completely stunned Liam where he stood. She looked immaculate in all the ball gowns with her makeup and hair perfectly done, but she had never been more beautiful to him than at that moment.
Liam shook his head in an attempt to steady himself but could feel his eyes burn with unshed tears. He quickly put the blanket down where he found it and continued.
As Liam resumed his trek, he stumbled upon a book or binder of some sort. The front and back surfaces were completely covered in different multicolored stickers. He opened it and realized it was not a binder, but a photo album.
Liam looked through the pictures with trembling hands. He saw photos of Riley as a baby with her parents, holidays, birthdays, sports, prom; practically her entire life in images. Toward the end, he found laminated funeral programs for family members Riley had lost.
Liam closed the album and wiped the tears from his cheeks that had unwillingly fallen. He knew Riley was a very sentimental person and would not have left this stuff behind purposefully. These things meant the world to Riley; her most cherished possessions, the things she was most proud of. It was one of the things that made Liam fall in love with her; in his world, all everyone cared about was power and prestige, but she cared about moments and making memories. He knew without a shadow of a doubt, she would not have left these things behind of her own volition.
Liam began to feel insurmountable rage, but couldn't ignore the all-consuming guilt that engulfed his conscience for turning a blind eye; especially knowing she could have been hurt before she left, or, that could have been why she left. More than that, he hadn't believed in Riley the way his friends did. He needed to be convinced to believe in her.
Drake had been observing Liam look through the photo album. In their many years together, he thought he had seen Liam at his lowest, but the man Drake was looking at now was unrecognizable; the defeat and guilt he felt were clear as day. When Drake saw him wipe his cheeks, his heart broke even more for his friend than it had been the past two months.
Drake approached Liam and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. "I'm sorry, Liam…" He softly spoke.
Liam sniffed. "What for? I should be thanking you. Without your persistence, I never would have opened my eyes…" He trailed off and shook his head as more tears unwillingly fell.
"Don't do that, Liam." Liam looked at Drake with a confused expression. "I can see it written all over your face. You're feeling guilty. You can't do that to yourself, man. I know it's hard, but you have to look forward. Don't dwell on what's already happened."
Liam scoffed. "That's easy for you to say. You didn't need to be convinced to believe in her. You didn't turn your back on her like I did..."
"If I was in your shoes I probably would have reacted the same way. You thought she abandoned you! I'd be devastated too! Then to see her in the tabloids two days later, I'd've been fucking livid! You might be a King, but first and foremost you're a man. You are allowed to make mistakes!" Drake emphasized.
"But this isn't just any mistake! This is the love of my life, and I didn't see through this sooner?"
Drake sighed. "When me and Olivia told Max, she had to bring us back because we were doing the same shit you're doing right now." He shook his head. "I know it's hard, but you can't dwell on what you did or didn't do back then. We won't get anything solved that way. We gotta focus on what we do now."
Liam shook his head. "I just can't believe this is happening…"
"I know. It's a lot to take in. But I'm glad you're with us now." Drake smiled.
"I swear to you, I will not rest until I find the truth. Someone is going to answer for this," Liam responded with a determined expression.
Drake embraced Liam, "I know." and patted him on the back.
"Thank you for being a great friend, Drake. I’d like to apologize for losing my temper with you earlier." Liam said as he returned the embrace.
"Don't worry 'bout it. I'm just so fuckin' happy you're finally listening to yourself." Drake spoke as he stepped away.
“Guys?” Olivia’s voice rang out from the other side of the shed, where they had not ventured to yet.
Drake and Liam approached her and noticed her troubled expression. She was crouched on the ground as she searched through a tote that was filled with Riley's things. Olivia stood and held a black trash bag in her hands. She reached in and pulled out a balled-up piece of fabric, carefully unfolded it, and spread it open wide for Liam and Drake to see.
Liam took the fabric from her hands. He realized he was holding a dress, but it was ripped and torn in multiple places. Some portions dangled, others completely detached. He knew he recognized it, but couldn't precisely place where he had seen it.
The dress was white with a pink flower pattern, about mid-thigh length. It had ruffles at the bottom and a silky heart neckline at the top, which is where the tears appeared to be more prominent as well as the fabric being noticeably stretched out. The midsection had a brown leather belt sewn into its design, but portions of that had been shredded as well.
Olivia noticed a specific area of the dress that was stuck together. She tentatively reached her hand out and grabbed the fabric and pulled, which separated the garment and revealed a large reddish-brown stain. It covered a portion of the back just above the ribs, and small spots on other areas of the dress. She reached out and lightly ran her finger over the large spot and felt that the surface was dry and hardened.
She grabbed the dress from Liam’s hands and spun it around to show him and Drake, both of their eyes widening within seconds.
As Liam stood and stared at the back of what was left of the dress, his heart suddenly plummeted to the depths of his stomach as he realized where he recognized it from. “That’s…” He swallowed thickly. “that’s the dress she was wearing… at the jamboree…” He whispered.
Drake bent down and picked up the bag. He opened it and saw other small pieces of the dress and even the stockings she had worn with it that night. He closed the bag and handed it to Liam with a heartbroken expression.
Liam took the bag from Drake’s hands and peeked inside. He already knew what was in there, but looking confirmed it. Although they were unsure as to whose blood was on the dress, they could only conclude it was Riley's.
Liam suddenly realized the maid who led them there, Rhonda, was still outside. He snatched the dress from Olivia’s hands and threw it into the bag. He turned and strode with deadly intent to where she stood outside the shed.
Liam practically threw the bag at Rhonda, “Have you ever seen this?” He growled.
She looked into the bag with wide eyes, “I– I– ” she stammered.
“ANSWER ME!" Liam yelled as he once again stood over the much smaller woman.
"I– I found it on the floor. I don't know where it came from! All I did was throw it into the bag!"
"So you find a bloodied dress, and instead of immediately reporting it to someone, anyone, you just throw it into a bag like it's nothing?!"
Rhonda frantically shook her head. "I didn't know-"
"BULLSHIT! It's blood! Do you really need a fucking technical course to tell you to use your brain?!" Liam yelled.
Bastien heard Liam from his position a little ways away, and quickly rounded the corner and approached him with a curious expression. "Is there a problem here, sir?"
"YES, there's a problem here! Look inside there, do you see that?!" Liam hollered without once breaking his attention away from the woman in front of him.
Bastien glanced past Drake to the shed behind him. He briefly met eyes with Olivia, who remained inside searching. She arched her brow as she met his gaze, but he quickly turned back to Liam.  "What would you like me to do, sir?"
"She knows something…" Liam growled as he stalked toward the woman little by little.
Liam stood to his entire height and squared his shoulders. He looked down at Rhonda over his nose; he puffed his chest out, only slightly, but enough to project his dominance over her. “I am giving you one last opportunity to tell me the truth. Failure to do so will result in you being placed in the custody of the Cordonian Royal Guard until you feel it’s acceptable to tell your King the truth.” He demanded in an authoritative voice.
Rhonda audibly inhaled a sharp breath, almost as if she had been hit in the gut. Her eyes welled with tears as she held her trembling hands together. “Your Majesty I swear to you on my children’s lives I know nothing else!” She dropped to her knees in front of him. “Please don’t take me from my kids! Please! I’ve told you everything I know! I'm so sorry I never said anything! P–please!” She cried as she lost herself in a fit of hysterics.
Liam stood over Rhonda while she sobbed, his mind reeling. He wanted to believe she knew more, but the more he thought about it, the more he realized whoever did this didn't let this lowly maid in on their master scheme; she was only a pawn. The likelihood of her knowing more than she had already told them was low, and she had given them the biggest lead yet in showing them where all of Riley's things were.
Even though he remained enraged, Liam crouched down in front of the woman and spoke in the softest tone he could force. "I will not take you from your children. I apologize for making barbaric threats to you. However, I need to make sure there's nothing else that you could tell us about that night."
Rhonda sniffed. "N–no, sir. I'm sorry I didn't say anything sooner but I was worried about getting in trouble for snooping because I need this job to support my kids and–"
Liam held up his hand to stop her rambling. "For future reference, if you believe a guest could have been injured you are to call my office immediately and report it to me. Am I clear?"
"Y–yes sir."
"This is a delicate situation, and your utmost discretion is required. You can not tell anyone we were here, or searching Lady Riley's things. Do you understand?" Rhonda quickly nodded her head. Liam stood from his crouched position and reached down and extended a hand to help her stand. "You are free to go, but please, if you remember anything else or see something suspicious, call my office."
"Shall I escort her back to the estate, sir? I'd like to ask her a few questions as well." Bastien asked, his eyes never once leaving the maid.
"Of course, Bastien. Thank you."
As Bastien led Rhonda away, Olivia reemerged from the shed. She found something that piqued her interest; it was a long shot, but she hoped perhaps her sudden hunch could poke yet another hole in the ordeal.
Olivia approached Liam, who stood beside Drake with his hands balled at his sides watching Bastien and the maid fade away. She cleared her throat and the two turned to face her; she handed Liam a blank envelope and said nothing.
He opened it and quickly scammed its contents; it was a letter from Riley to her grandma. She had told Liam about her letters home because her grandma wasn't smart with technology and didn't have a cell phone, but Riley wanted to stay in contact. There was no date, although it had been signed at the end. The text held no relevant information, aside from Riley retelling certain portions of her time in Cordonia, the last being their trip to the ancient ruins.
As he reached the bottom paragraph, he felt like his already dismembered heart was ripped from the confines of his chest and tossed onto the ground in front of him, leaving it for anyone and everyone to openly stomp on.
I really don't know if I would make a good Queen, but I know I can do anything with Liam by my side. He’s the most amazing person I've ever met and makes me feel like I could do anything, and I would do anything to be with him. It might seem fast, but I can feel it in the depths of my soul; he is my forever.
Liam took a deep, shaky breath to keep himself calm. The guilt was piling up, but he refused to let that dam open, not now. Their next move had to be calculated and precise, and he was more determined than ever to find her and ensure her safety. "Why are you showing me this?" He quietly asked Olivia.
"I can't confirm, because I didn't see the note that was left in her room, but I know both of you did. So I just wanted to ask, does the handwriting match?"
Liam took another good look at the paper; the one left in her room was short, so there was hardly anything to compare. Looking at this script in his hands, a few things did stand out.
"The s's are different, and the r's as well." Liam pointed to the paper. "On this, every single one has some kind of a swirl on it, not to mention its continuous cursive. The one left in her room was just plain print writing."
"And this one is signed Riley instead of R," Drake added.
"Do you still have that original letter?" Olivia asked.
"I… don't." Liam looked away from them and rubbed the back of his neck. "I, uh… I couldn't stand to have it anymore. I told Bastien to dispose of it…."
Olivia arched her brow. "I take it you did the same with her phone?" Once again, Liam avoided eye contact but subtly nodded his head. She felt her irritation rise at Liam's stupid decisions while in his state of denial, but opted to keep her comments within; even though he was fighting to keep it hidden, Olivia could tell he was already feeling the effects of his refusal to see the truth. "Well, we should at least check with him and see if he still has them; we can compare the letters and see if there's a chance they match." She sighed.  "Other than that, what's our plan?"
Liam was quiet for a long moment. His mind raced as he tried desperately to figure out where to go from here. They didn't have a lead as to who could have been responsible or any information regarding the scandal. The most evident thing to be found was the chilling revelation that someone hurt Riley in some way and a potentially falsified letter, otherwise, they had no solid leads.
Liam ran his hand down his face before he responded, "To start, I'll ask Bastien if he happened to keep those things. Otherwise, we need to begin a search for Tariq and Riley. Since the person in that photo you showed me can't be identified, they're the only two who know what actually happened. I'll have Bastien begin at once."
"The time I spent investigating by myself I tried to locate Tariq to question him, but he's gone."
"I'll have Bastien double-check, just to make sure he hasn't gotten sloppy and left a trace somewhere."
"Are you thinking Tariq did all this?" Drake asked.
"At this moment, no. We've known Tariq most of our lives and we all know he's not smart enough to do this." Drake and Olivia nodded their heads in agreement. “I have a feeling he could have been used in achieving someone else’s agenda, but as to who could be responsible, I don’t have a clue.”
"What do you think their ultimate plan was?"
Olivia snickered. "I shouldn’t be surprised you can't figure it out, considering your brain is the size of a walnut."
"Oh yeah? Enlighten us."
"Gladly," Olivia smirked. "Liam clearly wanted to pick Riley, that was no secret. Since Liam and I have been friends since we were children, I was obviously the second choice." She rolled her eyes but continued. "So whoever this person is formulated a plan to eliminate the two of us, leaving only Madeleine."
"There were other suitors." Drake retorted.
"Oh, please." Olivia scoffed.  "Madeleine was technically the most prepared beforehand, the others weren't even in the contest."
"But why go through all this, though?" Drake motioned to the shed.
"I don't actually have any idea why her things are stored here, yet. Otherwise, I can only assume they wanted to push the idea that Riley left to be with Tariq. First, remove her from the situation. Next, let Liam sit and stew for a few days contemplating why she left. Lastly, release a scandal; let everyone assume she was a harlot being swept away by another."
"And I played right into it, just like they knew I would," Liam growled as he shook his head. "It was important they cemented the theory because whoever did this knew I would continue looking for her without the scandal. They needed to give me a reason to abandon that search, despite all the signs, and I did…"  Liam looked away and forcefully tensed his jaw.
"I could be wrong, Liam… We really don't know much, yet." Olivia said in a surprisingly tender voice.
Liam sighed. "For now perhaps it's best if we lock this back up and reconvene after the Apple Banquet. That will give Bastien a day or so to start the search; we can see where we stand then?"
Drake and Olivia nodded, but Drake needed to ask Liam a question that had popped into his mind whilst they searched the shed and wouldn't leave. "Hey, Li?"
"Hm?"
"...What about the tour?"
Liam remained silent for a moment before he quietly answered. "I know it may not make sense to either of you, but the tour has to continue. First, I feel it will make investigating this easier. Clearly, something happened that night, but everything must go on as planned to avoid raising suspicion. Second…" He trailed off and looked away from Drake's curious gaze. "If we can't prove someone plotted to get Madeleine on the throne, I will have to go through with the wedding. There is nothing I can do about that, aside from abdicating."
Despite the seriousness of the situation, Olivia howled with laughter, which earned her a steely glare from Liam and a curious one from Drake. "Liam, you're the fucking King. You act as if you answer to all these people, but they answer to you. You're the one calling the shots, not them! If you don't want to marry her, then don't."
"I wish it were that simple, Olivia, but it's not. I have to take a Queen! Stability, above all–"
"Oh, my God!" Olivia exclaimed. "Am I talking to fucking Constantine or Liam?"
Liam could only stare at her with a stunned expression. Drake, however, had to hide his laugh with a cough; he had thought that same exact thing every time he heard Liam utter that statement.
Olivia continued. "I'm not trying to be insensitive, because I understand you want to do what's best for the country. But marrying Madeleine is not what's best for you or Cordonia."
Liam remained silent. Drake stepped forward after a moment and placed a hand on Liam’s shoulder. "You don't have to decide right now, just think about it, okay?"
Liam could only nod his head, as his mind refused to form a coherent sentence. After everything that had revealed itself that day, nothing made sense. He quickly dipped back inside the shed and grabbed Riley's blanket, cardinal, and photo album. Drake and Olivia gave him a curious glance as he emerged from the shed with the items, but he didn't care; he wanted to take these things with him so he could feel close to her again, and hopefully return them if he could ever find her.
Olivia placed the bag with the dress back inside the tote where she found it and secured the lock back in place; she slipped Riley's letter into her pocket for safekeeping, hoping and praying Bastien kept the one left in her room to compare.
The trio made their way back to the main estate as the sun was setting on the horizon. All three's minds were overflowing with questions, assumptions, accusations, and a wide variety of scenarios, all of which revolved around one thing: what happened to Riley Brooks?

In the days following his coronation, Liam worked tirelessly to assure the people of his country that, despite his unconventional decision, Cordonia would be stronger and more prosperous than ever under his leadership. The council had rebranded what was supposed to have been his engagement tour into an introduction tour, which would not only serve as a chance to begin solidifying alliances and good-will with other world leaders and political taste-makers, but a chance for him to show everyone just what King Liam’s Cordonia could be.
However, even with the nonstop calls, meetings and interviews, his mind couldn’t help but drift to Drake’s words.
I’m pretty sure it was obvious to everyone but you that she was into you.
You mean to tell me that you’re not even going to try?
He hadn’t planned on trying. He assumed that by turning down Maxwell’s invitation she wasn’t interested. But once again, he thought about what Drake said and considered Riley’s point of view. If he had been put in her place, he would have made the same choice. Maybe there was still hope.
Liam decided that before he began his tour, he needed to fly to New York and find her. He had spent months thinking about her, even if she wasn’t the one, perhaps it would give him some closure and allow him to move on. When his final meeting of the week was finished, he boarded the royal jet and made his way to the states.
When they landed, Liam requested that they go straight to the bar. He couldn’t wait any longer. As his SUV traveled the streets, his mind and heart were racing, thinking of all of the things he wanted to say, and reminding himself not to come on too strong, or get his hopes up too high.
The car slowed to a stop in front of the bar, and Liam’s head guard, Bastien, walked around the vehicle to open Liam’s door. The young king paused for a moment, taking  a deep breath to prepare himself. He was ready for a life full of deals and negotiations, he had been trained for it since childhood; but having to be open, and speak his heart was something completely foreign to him.
“Sir?” Bastien’s voice pulled him from his thoughts.
Liam nodded in acknowledgement and stepped out of the vehicle, moving toward the door. As soon as he stepped over the threshold, he was hit with the nostalgia of the last time he was there.
“Just a second.”
His breath caught in his throat at the voice calling from the kitchen.
She’s here.
His heart began racing as he neared the stools surrounding the bar. Just as he approached, Riley emerged from the kitchen, eyes trained on her notepad as she jotted something down.
She looked even more beautiful than he remembered. She kept her focus on the task in front of her as she walked past him and straight to a table, slipping the customer the receipt she had been writing on.
As soon as she turned around, Riley locked eyes with Liam and she froze in her spot. She wasn’t expecting to ever see him again.
“Hello, Riley.”
She stood in silence for another moment, trying to process the fact that Liam, the man she couldn’t seem to get out of her mind, was standing in front of him. “Hi Liam.” She managed to choke out.
Shaking off her surprise, she jumped right back into waitress mode. “Can I get you a table? Are your friends here with you again?” She paused for a moment, suddenly remembering what he had been doing in their time apart. “If you’re here with your fiancée, I can give you a quiet table in the back.”
“No, it’s just me this time.” He smiled at her. She didn’t know, she hadn’t been following the social season. He wasn’t sure whether or not that was a good sign. “I was actually hoping to speak with you, if you have a moment?”
“Oh, um…” She took a look around the bar. It wasn’t very busy, but there were customers that were going to need her attention. “Yeah, let me just check on a couple of tables. You can sit if you want.” She motioned to the bar. He nodded and took a seat on a stool.
After visiting each of her tables, and refilling a couple of glasses for the patrons at the bar, she stepped up to the spot where Liam was sitting. “Sorry,” she apologized. “Can I get you a drink?”
“No, I’m fine. Thank you.” He took a deep breath and searched her eyes, hoping for some kind of sign that she had missed him, or even thought about him once since he had left, but she had a wall up, he wasn’t even sure if she was happy to see him.
“So, how was your social season?” Riley asked, unsure what else to say.
“It was… eventful.” He mused. “My father officially stepped down from the throne.”
“Oh, wow. So you’re an actual king now?” Liam nodded. “Congratulations.” She noticed that Liam seemed uneasy about his sudden title change.
“I suppose. It was unexpected, and there was a lot behind it that made it a bit… bittersweet. But I knew I would end up here eventually.” He rubbed the back of his neck nervously.
“So how does your fiancée feel about the sudden fast track to queen?” She asked tentatively. She really didn’t want to hear about the woman he chose. She was probably smart, well spoken and gorgeous. Everything Riley felt she could never be.
Liam let out a breath, grateful that she brought it up first. “I don’t have a fiancée. I didn’t pick anyone.”
“But I thought you…”
“I was supposed to,” he took one of her hands in his, feeling emboldened by the moment and deciding to just dive in. “Riley, my whole life I’ve known I needed to put my duty to Cordonia above everything else. That included any ideas about romance, or marrying for love. As I went through my social season, I would try to weigh out my options, but my mind kept going back to our night together. I couldn’t pick any of those women because none of them were you.”
Riley stood in stunned silence, overwhelmed by Liams words, and the familiar, calming feeling of her hand in his. She felt him squeeze gently and she cleared her throat to compose herself. “I don’t understand.”
“I want to be with you, Riley.” It was a bolder statement than he intended to make, but he didn’t regret saying it.
She felt as though her heart was going to leap out of her chest, she still didn’t understand. How could this man, this king, this handsome, kind king have spent the last few months with women throwing themselves at him, and he’s standing here telling him he wants her. It didn’t add up.
“Riley?” His voice brought her out of her thoughts. She studied his expression, and noticed a vulnerability in his eyes.
“But… how would that even work?” She pulled her hand out of his and stepped back. “You’re on the other side of the world, the time difference must be insane.”
“It’s six hours,” He responded. “And I’m here now.”
“But not for long. You’re going to have to go home and rule a whole ass country. You honestly think you’re going to have time for me?”
Liam smirked, she was getting flustered, he took that as a sign that his feelings were returned. “The logistics can be figured out. And I will make time for you, no matter where I am, or what time zone I am in. You’re worth it.”
Riley’s brow furrowed in confusion. “How do you know?”
“Because I can feel it.” He replied, his eyes intently locked on hers. “Riley, there’s something between us. I felt it that night, it’s practically all I’ve thought about since we said goodbye, and I felt it again the second I walked through the door and heard your voice.”
“But…”
“Please,” he pleaded. “Just let me take you on one date. If after that, you can tell me that you truly don’t feel the connection, I will walk away and never bother you again.”
Riley didn’t need a date to know there was a connection, she was feeling everything he was. But she still had so many questions and doubts about the whole thing. The smart thing to do would be to say no, realistically, this would never work. All of the concerns that ran through her mind when Maxwell invited her to Cordonia came flooding back.
But did she want to do the smart thing? That’s what she thought she had done last time, and she’d been regretting it ever since. Riley had always played it safe and done the smart thing. She never took risks, and she was right where she had always planned to be. For the most part.
The hopeless romantic inside of her, the side she had silenced once before, was screaming at her to say yes. Love wasn’t logical, it wasn’t smart, it was a risk. Some of her favorite love stories included a visit to the seawich, trusting a fairy godmother, or taking a chance on seven strangers in the woods.
“Okay.” She answered softly, still unsure about where this would lead.
“Okay?” He repeated her hopefully. She nodded in response. “Wonderful!”
Riley smiled coyly at Liam’s excitement. “I’m actually free tomorrow night if that works for you?”
“Absolutely. I’ll pick you up at your apartment at seven?”
“Sure.”
Liam breathed a sigh of relief and stood from his barstool. “Perfect. You’re at the same address I walked you home to?”
“You remember?”
“Of course I do, I remember everything about that night.” He noticed a blush come over Riley at his response. “Maybe I could get your number though, just in case?”
Riley smiled, her eyes flitting to the floor. “Sure.” He handed her his phone, and she put her number into the contacts.
When she handed the phone back to him, his fingers lingered on hers for a moment before he pulled away, placing it in his pocket. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Riley watched Liam exit the bar, her eyes watching on the door until one of her customers called for her attention. She took a few orders and began mixing drinks, her mind drifting back to Liam and their conversation. She was nervous, terrified really, about going out with him. She couldn’t help but get ahead of herself, trying to figure out how a relationship with that much distance would work. Or why he would even want it to.
She was so lost in her thoughts that she didn’t notice Daniel enter the bar and come up behind her. “Holy shit,” Riley startled at his voice, nearly spilling the martini she had in her hand. “Sorry,” he smiled apologetically at his friend. “But it was important. You should have seen the smoke show I just passed on my way in here.”
Riley smirked to herself as she placed the drink in front of her customer and moved back across the room. She had a feeling she knew exactly who he was talking about. “Blonde hair, blue eyes, a little over six feet?”
“Yes, he was in here?!”
“That’s uh…” She picked up a rag and began wiping down the bar, avoiding eye contact with Daniel. “That’s Liam, the guy from the bachelor party.”
His jaw dropped. “Prince Charming?” She nodded with a small chuckle. “What was he doing here?”
Riley recapped the conversation for a stunned Daniel. She had given him a full rundown of their time together when she had returned to the apartment that night, but hadn't mentioned anything about him since. However, Daniel knew better than to think it was just a fleeting moment to her. He’d never seen her light up about anything, or anyone the way she did when she was recalling every last detail of Liam and their evening together.
“But you said yes, right?” Daniel asked hopefully.
“I mean yeah, how could I say no to all of that?” Riley shrugged. “But I don’t know.”
Daniel rolled his eyes. “Come on Ri, I get it, you’ve got this whole don’t see how great you are thing, and that’s your vibe. But seriously,” he placed his hands on her shoulders and looked her in the eye. “This man has already done more for you after knowing you for a couple of hours than your last boyfriend did all that time you were together. Take the hint. He wants you.”
“How does a relationship like that even work?” She continued to protest.
“First of all, it’s a date, not a relationship.” Daniel corrected her. “Second of all, if it gets to that, you figure it out. And then you invite me to your lavish royal wedding, because technically this is all thanks to me.” He winked.
“Alright, alright, I’ll go.” Riley chuckled. “What are you even doing here? It’s your night off.”
“I wanted to be your last customer.” He smiled, taking a seat at the bar. “I’ll have my usual, barkeep.”
***
The next day, Riley spent most of the morning rifling through her closet, trying to assemble the perfect outfit for her date with Liam.
“Daniel, help!”
Daniel rushed into Riley’s room to find clothes scattered over every inch of the space. “Holy shit Ri, what happened here?”
Riley looked up at Daniel from her seat on the floor, gripping onto two shirts. “What do grown ups wear on dates?”
“Oh Riley,” he dropped down on his knees by his friend’s side, wrapping his arm around her. “Just relax.”
“I can’t relax. I haven’t gone on an actual date in almost four years. I was just a kid. And this isn’t just a grown up date, it’s a grown up date with a king. Fuck,” her eyes went wide and she turned to face Daniel. “Am I supposed to wear a ballgown?”
He didn’t want to make her feel worse, but Daniel couldn’t help but chuckle at her panic. “I don’t think he’s expecting that.” He pried the shirts out of her grip. “Listen, he asked you out because he likes you, you don’t have to get all fancy. That’s what he turned down to come here to find you. Just be yourself, cute and comfortable.”
“But what if he’s taking me somewhere fancy? Guys like him don’t go to hole in the wall pizza places, or burger joints.”
“Or dive bars?” Daniel retorted with an arched brow. “You’re overthinking this. Here,” he reached behind her, picking up a green high low dress. “This is perfect. Wear it with that leather jacket you have. Classy and cool, you’ll be ready for anything.”
“Daniel, it’s perfect!” She wrapped her arms around him and brought him into a hug. “Thank you.”
“Of course, but listen,” he pulled back, looking at her with concern in his eyes. “You need to relax, you’ve got this. He asked you out, he flew halfway across the world for this date, safe to say he wants it.”
“That’s the problem,” she huffed, standing up and laying her dress on the bed. “He was supposed to pick a fiancée in his own county. He didn’t and then he came here, because of me. Do you have any idea how much pressure that is? He barely knows me.”
Daniel followed her, wrapping his arm around her shoulder. “That’s what first dates are for.”
Over the next few hours, as Riley got ready for her date, Daniel made sure to be there to guide her back when she fell too deep down the rabbit hole of worry and self-doubt about how the evening would go.
She was putting the finishing touches on her look when her phone chimed. It was a number she didn’t have saved, but the second she saw the message she knew who it was. The butterflies in her stomach kicked into high gear, Liam had arrived. He didn’t have her apartment number, so he couldn’t ring them to be buzzed up. She gave him the number and called down the hall for Daniel to buzz him in.
Riley slid on her shoes and made her way down the hall, where Daniel was waiting in the living room. She gave him a nervous smile. “Do I look alright?”
“Like a princess.” Daniel grinned. She rolled her eyes, making Daniel laugh. “You’ve got this Ri, trust me.”
As the elevator made its ascent to the fourth floor, Liam’s fingers tapped nervously against his thigh. He had spent all day preparing for this, it needed to go perfectly. The doors opened, and he stepped into the hallway stopping in front of the door marked ‘11D’. He took a deep breath before lifting his fist and wrapping gently. The door opened, and Liam’s breath caught in his throat when he laid his eyes on her.
“Riley you look,” he paused, taking another moment to admire her from head to toe. “Stunning.”
“Thank you,” he caught the blush in her cheeks just before her gaze dropped.
They stood in silence, not believing that they were actually here. They had both imagined this moment, but neither thought it would ever be more than that.
“I brought you these.” Liam broke the silence, holding up a bouquet of roses. “I wasn’t sure what your favorite flower was, I hope roses are okay?”
Riley smiled, taking the bouquet from Liam and lifting them to her nose. “They’re perfect.” Liam let out a sigh of relief. “Let me just go put them in some water, I’ll be right back.”
While Riley was in the other room, Liam took the opportunity to look around the apartment to try to learn a bit more about her. The decor wasn’t exactly what he had pictured for her, and she didn’t appear to be in many of the photos. He found it curious.
“Ready?” Riley pulled him from his thoughts.
Liam smiled and offered his arm to her. “Absolutely.”
He led her out of the apartment and to the elevator. As the cab made its descent, the pair stood in silence, Liam noticed that Riley seemed nervous. He could understand that, he was nervous too, but there was also an uneasiness about her that concerned him.
“Is everything alright?” Liam asked tentatively, hoping the evening was not about to end before even getting started.
“Yeah,” she smiled up at him softly. He felt his heart flutter at the sight. “I’m just a little nervous is all.”
Liam grinned as the doors opened. “Understandable,” he raised his arm, signaling for her to exit the elevator. Once she stepped over the threshold, he followed behind her. “I’m pretty nervous too.”
“You are?”
“Definitely,” he assured her as they moved outside. He walked her to the SUV that was waiting in front of her building, opening the door for her. He slid in behind her and closed the door before continuing. “If we’re being candid, this is actually my first real date.”
Riley contorted her face into a look of disbelief. “Yeah, okay,” she replied, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
“I’m serious!” He chuckled. “Growing up as part of the royal family, things were different. I was introduced to women, but our time would be spent at courtly functions. It was nothing like dating as you know it.”
Riley nodded in understanding, a brief silence coming over them. “As a matter of fact,” he continued. “I wanted everything to be perfect tonight, so I did some research on first dates.”
“You did?” She smiled. ‘That’s actually really cute.”
“I’m very glad you think so.”
“Well, since we’re having truth time,” Riley took a deep breath, and looked down at her hands, which sat in her lap. “I guess I’m just a little worried that after all this time, and after everything you did to come here and ask me out, I’m not going to be worth it.”
Liam’s heart sank at her confession. The last thing he wanted was to put any pressure on her, and he especially hated that she was worried she wasn’t enough. He realized in that moment that he may have come off a bit stronger than he anticipated when he had seen her the night before.
“Riley,” he said, gently placing his hand on her shoulder to comfort her. “I’m so sorry for putting that pressure on you. I assure you, while my feelings for you did have a part in the decision I made at my coronation, it wasn’t the only reason.”
He went on to explain his conversation with Leo, and how it had inspired him to forge his own path. He also told her about the conversation he had with Drake later in the night; leaving out the part about how obvious it was to everyone how she felt about him. She was already feeling insecure, he thought that would only make things worse. Instead, he told her that Drake suggested the best way to find his happiness was to go back to the last place where he felt truly happy.
“And you picked the night we met?” Riley asked.
“I did,” he smiled softly at her. “Riley, I can’t predict the future. I don’t know where this is going to go, if it goes anywhere at all. But what I do know is that when I was with you that night, I felt comfortable, free. It was something I hadn’t felt for a long time, and it meant a lot to me.”
Riley felt her cheeks get warm as she dropped her gaze to her lap. “It was a pretty great night, wasn’t it?”
“Absolutely, and that’s the only expectation I have for tonight. To have a pretty great night, with a pretty great girl.” He placed his index finger under her chin, tilting it so their eyes were locked.
Riley looked into his eyes and was met with a sincerity that gave her butterflies. At that moment, all of her questions and worries were gone; replaced by anticipation and excitement of what the evening, and the future, held.

Stretching her arms over her head, Riley slowly opened one eye as she heard the familiar knock on her cabin door. The morning sun shone through the train window and across her bed. She softly smiled and swung her legs over the side, her feet touching the cool floor. She yawned and walked over to the door, pulling it open.
"Rise and shine, queen-to-be!" Maxwell Beaumont was his usual jubilant self. "Did you sleep well, little blossom? I brought you some breakfast!"
The rich aroma of medium roast coffee hit her senses while Chance jumped up excitedly at the smell of pancakes and bacon. ‘Arf ... Arf ...’
“Ah, yes. My entrance is welcomed by the corgi choir."
"That smells amazing. Thank you soooo much, Max."
"You are very welcome, Your Majesty," Maxwell winked, giving a little bow and grinning at her. "You'd better hurry and get ready."
The Royal court was in Paris, France; today's event ... the Royal tea party.
Riley took the tray from Maxwell, and Chance sat at her feet. "Good morning, little pup," Maxwell cooed, as Chance happily accepted a pet and scratch behind his ears.
"So, are you ready for afternoon tea with the former queen?" Maxwell asked.
"Yeah, I guess. She's not exactly my favorite person, but... I'm still curious."
"She's a formidable woman," Maxwell shuddered.
"But on the bright side, this could be the perfect opportunity to corner her about her involvement with the scandal and get your answers!"
"I hope you're right," Riley sighed, slipping Chance a small piece of bacon.
"At a public event, she'll be caught off guard! She won't be able to run off or dodge you."  Max added.
"And if she's not forthcoming, we might be able to do a little digging with the other nobles at the tea party."
"That's the spirit!" Maxwell grinned. "If you ever need a little extra confidence, you know who to call."
"Yes. Thank you for everything, Max."
"Of course. But first, get ready for the day! We don't want to be late!"
‘Arf!’ Chance barked, agreeing with him.
"Can Chance come?" Riley wondered aloud.
"I wish he could, but the venue doesn't allow pets. I'll bring him along to the duchy later, though."
"Okay, that's good, thanks, Max."
"Now, go and get ready. Don't worry about a thing. I've got the corgis covered. See you at the tea party!" Maxwell gave Riley a mock salute before he closed her door behind him.
After finishing her breakfast and a quick shower, Riley pulled out a gorgeous light blush dress with a delicate floral print. She applied her makeup, dried her hair, then snapped a gold barrette into place.
She stepped out of the train and went into the waiting limousine. After a short drive, Riley arrived at the extravagant tea party at an uptown Parisian hotel. It was a beautiful spring day, and the hotel was decorated with the finest flower arrangements.
Riley entered the formal tearoom; hearing soft, elegant music and people's chatter. The room was decorated with luxurious chandeliers and intricate floral arrangements. Tables were covered with fine linen tablecloths, and chairs were upholstered in plush velvet. A small orchestra was playing softly in the corner, and servers were carrying trays laden with exquisite tea sets and delicious-looking cakes. Riley recognized a few ladies and gentlemen from the court, but everyone else was a mystery.
She spotted Madeleine and Hana chatting at the far end of the hall. As she approached, Madeleine spotted her and quickly ended the conversation with Hana.
"Lady Riley, its good of you to join us."
"This is lovely; I am drowning in ruffles," Riley quipped.
"I'm afraid that's one of the finer points of an elegant event like this one. To be honest, I wouldn't expect you to appreciate it lady Riley, so don't strain yourself."
"Oh, we wouldn't want that, would we?" Riley countered, rolling her eyes.
"Well, do try to enjoy yourself." Madeleine sauntered off before Riley could say anything else.
"Wow. That was... nice." Riley responded sarcastically under her breath. Stepping to the side, trying to read the place cards, she bumped into someone.
"Well, hello. What a pleasure to see you here, Lady Riley. You look stunning, as always." Liam smiled, expressing tenderness as he kissed her cheek.
"Liam! Thank you. It's great to see you, too! I didn't think you'd be here."
"My schedule's been quite busy lately. I am only here to make the opening remarks. I was actually hoping to spend some time with you after this event."
"That would be wonderful." Riley answered, delightedly.
"It's been too long. I'd love to hear how you're doing."
"Liam, ...wishing I could kiss you right now."
"Lady ... Riley you shouldn't say such things." Liam murmered as he looked at her hungrily, his eyes sweeping over her face.
"Maybe I'm hoping you'll get a little reckless."  Riley whispered.
“Maxwell mentioned that you recently adopted a puppy.”
Riley’s eyes lit up, a smile tugging at her lips.
"Oh, yeah, his name is Chance. He's a little ball of orange and white fluff. He was lost when Maxwell found him.”
"That sounds wonderful. I'm glad you're enjoying his company."
"He's a really good boy. He's so friendly and happy. He loves to play, and he's really good at fetching."
"I can't wait to meet him. Maybe I'll even steal him from you," Liam teased.
"You can try, but I'm pretty sure he'd choose me," Riley shot back, her eyes sparkling with mirth.
"I would love to meet him sometime. In fact, we could spend the afternoon together at the park."
"That sounds lovely."
Noticing dignitaries walking towards them, behind Riley, Liam sighs regrettedly,
"I fear our time alone is coming to an end ... I better greet these guests. But, please wait for me. I don't want to delay any longer to spend some time with you. Let's go after the tea party."
"Okay."  Riley beamed
"There's a break in the tour schedule tonight so I can slip out for the night. See you later?" Liam looked at her pleadingly.
"Yes, Liam ... later."
Riley felt the heat rise in her cheeks and butterflies in her stomach as Liam kissed her cheek, letting his lips linger on her cheek.
Squeezing her hand, Liam turned away to greet the nobles.
🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂
Placing the linen table napkin on her lap, Riley’s attention was pulled to the sound of Madeleine's voice as she stepped in front of a microphone on the dais. As she begins her formal address to the court, Olivia slid into the chair next to Riley.
“I never liked her.”
“You don't like anyone, Liv.”
“True, but I especially dislike her.”
“Oh, dear, let's get something to drink.” Hana responds trying to change the subject of conversation.
“Of course, let's engage in frivolous social conversation and engage in witty banter.” Olivia snidely responds. Her mood quickly turning despondent as she watched the King address the room.
Riley noticed her abrupt change in mood as her expression shifted to sadness as she watched Liam across the room.
“Olivia, are you okay?” Riley asked in a whisper as Olivia shakes her head, “No ... he's engaged to Madeleine and in love with you ... I can't help how I feel about him, can I?”
"Olivia, I think --"
Abruptly standing up from the table, “at least I still have my pride. Just let me leave with it.”
Olivia walked out without looking back. Hana watched her leave with a concerned look on her face. “I wonder what that was about.”
Riley bit her lip as she turned her gaze to regard Hana.
“I hope she's able to sort things out. She's been through so much."
"Speaking of which ... how are you doing, Riley?”
“I'm holding up okay,”  Riley sighed, seeing the opportunity to talk to Queen Regina.
🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂
After a disappointing conversation with the queen mother, and later, saying goodbye to Hana ...
Riley looked up to see Liam waiting for her at the front entrance, appearing eager to spend some time together.
Riley couldn't help but smile as she approached him.
"Your Majesty," she dipped into a small curtsy, smiling coyly.
"Lady Riley," Liam greeted her, a smile lighting up his face.
As he escorted Riley to his SUV, Liam leaned close and softly spoke,
"we'll be having company." Liam chuckled at her confused look, as the sliding passenger door opened.
Riley peeked inside and saw a fluffy ball of orange and white fur curled up on the back seat. "Chance!"
Chance's ears perked up at the sound of her voice. He jumped out of the car, barking happily. He jumped around her, wagging his tail so fast that his entire butt shook.
Riley laughed, dropping to her knees. Chance jumped into her lap, licking her face.
Liam grinned. "Looks like he missed you."
"Aw, I missed you, too."
Arriving at a Parisian dog park, the crisp autumn air filled Riley's lungs as she breathed deeply. Puffy, white and gray clouds were overhead, and the trees were ablaze with red, orange and yellow around you.
Riley and Liam walked hand-in-hand, Chance trotting ahead of them. The leaves crunched under their feet, and the sounds of children playing nearby filled the air.
"It's such a beautiful day," Riley remarked, looking around.
"It is," Liam agreed. "Autumn is my favorite season. I love the changing colors of the leaves, and the way the air feels chilled."
Riley looked over at Liam, admiring the way his blue eyes shone in the sunlight. "I love the way you see the world, Liam."
"Likewise. You make me want to see everything in a new light."
They continued walking, taking in the beauty of the park. Chance ran ahead, chasing birds and squirrels.
As they rounded a bend, Riley spotted a man and his dog. She watched as the man tossed a ball, and the dog darted after it. The dog returned, the ball in his mouth, and the man pet him lovingly.
"That's what I want," Riley said suddenly. "To have a relationship with Chance like that."
"You will," Liam assured her. "Chance loves you, and you're already doing a great job with him. You're a natural."
As they reached the center of the park, Riley looked up. The sky was now darker; the sun hidden by the clouds.
"I wish we could just stay here, in this moment," Riley breathed. "It's perfect."
"It is." Liam gazed into her eyes, a smile tugging at his lips.
Riley leaned closer, and Liam closed the distance between them. Their lips met, and Riley felt her heart flutter. Liam's lips were soft and warm, and Riley sighed contentedly.
The moment was interrupted by the sudden downpour of rain. Riley squealed and grabbed Liam's arm.
"Let's get under the gazebo," Liam chuckled, bending down to pick up Chance.
They ran to the shelter of the gazebo, laughing and wiping the rain from their faces.
"Well, that was unexpected," Riley giggled.
"I'll say," Liam laughed.
Riley wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him in for another kiss. This time, the kiss was deeper, more passionate.
They stayed under the gazebo, kissing, as the rain fell around them. It was a perfect moment, and Riley never wanted it to end.
"Lady Riley," Liam breathed.
"Hmm?"
"You're getting wet."
"I am."
"And you don't even seem to care."
"I don't."
Liam laughed, shaking his head. "What am I going to do with you?"
"I can think of a few things," Riley grinned, kissing him again.
Liam returned the kiss fervently, wrapping his arms around her tightly. They stayed under the gazebo, the rain pouring down around them, lost in each other.
They pulled apart reluctantly as Chance barked and ran onto the grass and runs quickly back over to them, with a ball in his mouth.
"It seems he's ready for a game of fetch," Liam chuckled.
"I'm ready, too," Riley said, winking at Liam.
"Let's play."
Riley tossed the ball for Chance, and they both laughed as they joined the chase, returning to the downpour outside of the gazebo.
Riley giggled as she spun around, her arms extended. Liam grabbed her hands and pulled her close, the rain dripping from their hair.
"You're the most beautiful woman I've ever seen," Liam stroked her cheek and gently moved her hair behind her ear.
Riley's breath caught in her throat.. She didn't know what to say.
"Liam," she whispered.
Liam leaned down, his lips brushing hers. Riley's heart raced, and she kissed him back, the rain falling around them. Liam's hands were warm on her back, and she pressed herself closer to him, deepening the kiss.
It was the most perfect moment Riley could have imagined. She didn't want it to end.
The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the park. The rain had stopped, and the air smelled fresh and clean. Riley and Liam were walking hand-in-hand, Chance trotting along beside them.
"Today was wonderful," Riley said. "Thank you, Liam."
"I should be the one thanking you," Liam replied. "You've brought so much happiness into my life."
"You deserve all the happiness in the world, Liam," Riley said, smiling up at him.
Liam leaned in, his lips brushing against hers. Riley's heart fluttered, and she wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer.
"I want to show you something," Liam murmured, breaking the kiss.
"What is it?"
"Come on." Liam took her hand and led her down a path, Chance following close behind.
"Where are we going?" Riley asked, her curiosity piqued.
"It's a surprise." Liam grinned, and Riley's heart skipped a beat.
They walked through the park, the sunset painting the sky in shades of pink and gold. Riley could see the Eiffel Tower in the distance, and the streets of Paris were bustling with activity.
"Close your eyes," Liam said.
"Okay." Riley did as he asked, trusting him completely.
"Now, take my hand and step forward."
Liam's hand was warm and strong, and he guided her carefully. After a few steps, he stopped.
"Can I open my eyes?"
"Not yet," Liam chuckled.
Riley waited patiently, the anticipation building.
"Okay," Liam said. "Open your eyes."
Riley opened her eyes, and gasped. They were standing at the edge of the lake, and the water reflected the sky perfectly. The colors were vibrant, and the Eiffel Tower was lit up, casting a golden glow over everything.
Riley's hand was warm in his. Liam glanced at her and smiled. They were walking through the park, the stars twinkling above. Chance was trotting alongside them, his tongue hanging out.
"It's such a beautiful night," Riley remarked, looking up at the sky.
"It is," Liam agreed. "Though I am a bit hungry."
"I'm starving," Riley laughed. "All that exercise has me worked up an appetite."
"Let's head back to the train, then." Liam started leading them towards the edge of the park.
"Oh, no, you don't," Riley teased, tugging him back. "I have a better idea."
"What's that?"
"Let's grab some food first and then bring it back to the train."
"Sounds like a plan," Liam grinned.
"There's a little café not far from here. We could get something to go."
"Perfect."
"C'mon, Chance," Riley called. "You're eating too!"

Paring - Liam x Riley (present) ; Riley x OC (past)
Author's note : I have always wondered why there is no proper discussion regarding Riley's past so this is something I came up with.
Warning- Alluding to smut and mention of death
A special thanks to @ao719 and @kristinamae093 for encouraging me to write this down and helping me throughout the story 💕

"Please don't leave me please. I don't have anyone other than you." Riley begged the person in front of her as tears continuously fell from her eyes but he was not listening. Riley held his hand with all her might not letting him go but when she looked up at him, she couldn't speak because those eyes which were always filled love care and concern for her were filled with hate and resentment. Riley was heartbroken seeing his gaze like this but she didn't let go, at last the man in front of her forcefully removed her hand from his arm and left her alone. No matter how much she screamed or begged he kept moving. As Riley sat there, the darkness seemed to envelope her completely. She was stuck in the loop of never-ending nightmares that left her completely vulnerable.
While Riley was inside her own little bubble fighting her inner demons all by herself in her sleep Liam was looking at her, his eyes filled with concern as he watched his wife's trembling body. He woke up in middle of the night but she showed no sign of waking up hearing her whimpers, it was not the first time he saw her like this, he wanted to talk to her, help her with whatever problem she was facing but Riley always changed the topic or stopped their talk altogether. He tried to wake her up but she was showing no sign of waking up. Since he couldn't do anything in middle of the night other than calming her down, he hugged her cuddling her closer to himself after a while Riley stopped trembling and instinctively moved closer to Liam in her sleep. After sometime Liam also drifted off.
A week later Liam and Riley were in New York for the gala, Liam had his arms around her waist as they talked with few delegates, all of a sudden Liam felt his hand being crushed from Riley's vice grip when he looked at her he saw that she was staring at the door her eyes red due to anger. Liam was not aware of the man's identity but when he saw him looking at Riley with a smirk on his face he felt his blood boil , he excused himself from the delegates he was talking and led her to the side. When Riley looked at him he saw that she desperately tried to hold back her tears,
"Talk to me, I hate seeing you like this. It breaks my heart love" Liam said
Listening to him Riley's tears started to fall and she lets out a sob.
"I am here, I'll always be here" Liam told her
"Can we talk somewhere in private" Riley asked and Liam nodded leading her to the balcony.
In the balcony Riley held the railing looking at the huge buildings of New York taking deep breaths to calm down her nerves , after a while she began to speak.
"The man you saw outside is Jerome, he was my ex boyfriend. Jerome and I used to study in the same law college.I thought we were in love and we will spend rest of our lives together" said Riley
"What exactly happened?" asked Liam.
"I met Jerome six years ago , six years ago he....."
"I know I said you should talk, but if you want to take more time, I'll not force you." Liam said as he enveloped her palm in his own when he saw she was struggling to speak.
"No, it was really hard for me to even start this conversation, if I stop now I don't know if I could ever get back, strong enough to talk again"
Liam nodded waiting for her to continue. Riley sighed once more and began speaking.
-----------------------------------
Riley stood at the entrance of Harvard Law College along with her parents and her elder brother. She held the admission letter in her hand excited to start the new phase of her life as a college student. Few hours later, rest of the procedures for her admission were were done and the dean's assistant handed over the keys of her dormitory.
"I am so excited dad" exclaimed Riley happily as she held her father's arm.
Her father Austin smiled seeing her so happy and patted her arm affectionately. "Of course you are, you worked so hard for this."
Her brother Charles came to her and threw his arm casually around her shoulder. "I'm also excited you know, I will not see your irritating face after today"
"Oh please, you love me too much my dear big brother and I am sure you'll cry after going back home"
"Cry?" scoffed her brother "I will throw a feast"
"Okay enough both of you, stop bantering" scolded Christine, their mother.
"Mooooommmmm" both whined at the same time but Christine ignored them. She turned to Austin "I'll go with Riley and help her settle in her dormitory"
"Are you sure you want to live in dormitory?" asked her dad. "I can look for a flat nearby"
"You don't have to dad, I'll be fine."
Two days later she bid goodbye to her parents and Charles.
The first time Riley saw Jerome he was alone in a lecture hall looking quite handsome and Riley like any other girl was attracted by his good looks but she had something to do so she didn't stay. When she came back he was gone. She often found herself thinking about him so when the professor told him to sit beside her she was beyond happy.
"Hi, I am Riley Brooks. Nice to meet you" she introduced herself as she held out her hand for handshake.
He smiled and held her hand to shake it "Jerome Alston and nice to meet you too."
After that day Riley and Jerome became really good friend, they were always seen together talking an laughing. One day on the way to their canteen Jerome stopped her holding her hand.
"I have something to tell you but I don't know where to begin" he said nervously as he avoided looking directly at her face.
"Why are so nervous? You didn't steal something right?" she joked.
"No, of course not don't be ridiculous." Suddenly he was on his knee in front of her.
"Riley Brooks will you be my girlfriend"
Riley's mind went blank for a second, she couldn't believe that Jerome was proposing her. She only came back to her sense when others started cheering around her.
"Yes, yes I'll be your girlfriend" Riley dropped at his level hugging him tightly.
-------------------------------
Riley stopped speaking for a while, Liam too didn't say anything waiting for her to continue.
"When Jerome proposed me I was really happy. To know that the man I liked, liked me back gave me a different kind of happiness. He was very attentive towards me. Giving me flowers out of blue, taking me on dates on almost every weekend. Slowly but surely I was falling deeply for him. His birthday was coming up and I wanted to do something special but after that night everything changed"
-------------------------------
Riley wanted to do something special for him, so she decorated his whole apartment and baked his favourite chocolate cake. They celebrated his birthday in his apartment with their friends. After the celebration was over and everyone went back, Jerome requested Riley to stay back with him to which she agreed.
"Would you like a drink " he asked her as they both sat on the couch.
"Yes please" she replied.
Jerome poured two glasses of whiskey and handed her one glass. As they drank they started getting tipsy. When Riley looked at him ,the lust in his eyes couldn't be concealed, the candles made the atmosphere more romantic. After that one thing led to another and soon both of them were naked entangled in each other's arms
Around 3 a.m. Riley slipped into deep slumber in Jerome's arm, combined with the alcohol in her body and everything else that happened she was so tired that she failed to notice his smug smile the small red light blinking in the corner of the room.
Next day, when Riley arrived at the college she met with a huge blow. Her intimate photos with Jerome was being circulated through social media, in those pictures Riley's face was clearly visible but Jerome's face was blurred. Few of them were pitying her but most of them were laughing at her misfortune. Riley didn't want to believe that Jerome was the one behind the incident but everything was pointing towards him so she went to confront him. Se found him in the canteen with his friends.
After confronting Jerome she got to know that Jerome never really loved her and all he did was just for sake of a bet he made with his friends. She was truly heartbroken but she was not going to cry for him.
At that moment she felt nothing else then anger, she was angry with Jerome for playing with her emotions, for making her believe that they had something special.
She was so angry that she couldn't resist the urge to slap him , so she in front of everyone in the canteen slapped him. Due to the hard slap Jerome's face turned sideways and soon the red mark of Riley's hand became prominent on his face.
"You bi**h" Jerome yelled angrily.
"You deserve it Jerome Alston, so stop looking at me like I have did something wrong"
-------------------------------
"After everything I didn't feel like facing anyone so I directly went to my dormitory. I thought the matter would settle down on its own but before that could happen I got a call from my dad. My parents knew about the photos. I told them I'll handle everything but they didn't listen and decided to drive instead of taking the train, on the way they were hit, mom died on the spot from excessive blood loss and dad was in critical condition"
-------------------------------
Riley was sitting in her dorm holding her phone, she just had a heated conversation with her father. She knew that her parents were concerned but they didn't have to come there all the way from Boston. She sighed and got busy with her works, half an hour later she got a call from her brother Charles.
"If you're calling to tell me..."
"Mom and dad met with an accident" Charles whispered on the call.
"What?" Riley wasn't sure if she heard correctly.
"THEY HAD AN ACCIDENT OK, MOM IS GONE....." he yelled angrily
Riley could clearly hear the slight tremble in his voice.
"Mom is gone and the doctors are not sure if dad could even make it through the operation"
Before Riley could say anything she heard the beep sound from her phone singling the end of phone call. She immediately booked the tickets for flight and after informing the college dean she went to airport with her phone and a small tote bag.
When she reached the hospital she saw Charles sitting leaning along the wall sobbing, she ran to him.
"Charles" she called out.
"Dad's gone too, I am an orphan now" Riley heard him muttering. She couldn't hold back her tears, she got down on her knees and hugged Charles as he wept hugging her. After he stopped weeping he pushed her away and got up from the floor and then helped her up.
"Just go home, I'll handle everything here"
"But Charles..."
"Just go home please"
Riley wanted to stay but she went back home after Charles insisted. When she reached home, she looked around, this was the place where she grew up. She remembered how her father used to move around the house with both her and Charles in his arms when they were little, she remembered how she would fight with her dad over the last cronut which they both loved especially if Christine was the one who made them and how every time her mom would be waiting for both her children at the gate when they came back from school.
When the sudden realisation hit her that her parents were truly gone, something clenched her heart making it hard for her to breathe. Riley didn't cry when she came to know about Jerome's betrayal, she didn't cry when everyone around her mocked her and called her name but she couldn't hold her grievances to herself any longer. She wanted to scream, trash everything around, anything that would help her vent out everything but she fell with a thud and cried her heart out, she didn't know when she passed out but when she woke up, it was already 5 a.m. in the morning. She was lying on the couch with a thin blanket on her and Charles was sitting there with his eyes closed and head tilted backwards, her movements woke him up.
"It's still early, why don't you go to your room and sleep for few more hours" Charles told her.
"Mom dad?"
"They are kept in the morgue, we can bring them back after I make the preparations for their funeral"
"They are really gone" Riley muttered not sure if she was telling it to herself or Charles.
Charles didn't reply, he just scooted closer to her, allowing her to hug him. No one said anything after that, they just sat there watching the sky brightening eventually. Both of them started getting messages from friends and family.
Three days later the funeral was held, Charles and Riley bid the final goodbye to their parents as they both laid in casket. They were covered with bandages but Riley still thought that her mother was the most beautiful lady and her father the most handsome man.
After the funeral was over Riley and Charles came back home, Riley felt that something was wrong with Charles, he was so lost in thoughts that he didn't even notice that a pillar was in front of him. Before he could hit his head on the pillar Riley pulled him back.
"Can't you see there is a pillar?" Riley exclaimed
"I am sorry I am quite tired I didn't notice" Charles told her
Riley took a deep breath to calm down her nerves "I can understand, I am tired too. Just go and change, I'll bring something to eat"
Charles nodded and headed upstairs, after Riley brought their food to Charles's room, they ate in silence, after that Riley went back to her room wishing him good night. She was so tired that sleep consumed her as soon as she hit the bed. In middle of the night she felt someone holding her hand, she could not hear if anything was being said but she started feeling anxious all of a sudden and wanted to wake up but no matter how hard she tried she couldn't open her eyes due to tiredness.
-------------------------------
"That night was the last time I saw Charles, when I woke up next morning he was gone along with all his belongings. I tried calling him, you know I called his colleagues, his friends and even his ex girlfriend but no one knew where was he. I slept soundly that night because I was so sure that no matter how hard it would be without mom and dad by elder brother will always be with me through thick and thin. I can't explain that feeling Liam, I was angry, helpless and everything was falling apart. It seemed as if the whole world has abandoned me."
"Why didn't you tell me any of this? I know I cannot change your past but I could have been there for you, I could've helped you overcome the grief" Liam told her
"How Liam? Everyone around me started telling me that it was my fault that my parents were dead, that Charles left because he hated me, you know I started having nightmares after Charles left, I always see him leaving me alone and every time I feel like the same helpless girl who was abandoned by everyone around her . I was afraid that you might think that I was the reason for everything that happened." Riley said as she slipped into his embrace
Liam hugged her tightly as he patted her back "None of it was your fault love, and I would never ever blame you for mistakes someone else committed."
When Riley looked up at him her eyes with filled with pain and agony but there was an unmistakable tint of love present.
Liam kissed her forehead and held her in his arms for few minutes, after few minutes he unwrapped his arms and said"We should go back we have been here for a long time"
Riley nodded and they both went inside.
Her reunion with Charles a month later in Cordonia was something unexpected for Riley, when Charles first came to Cordonia she was really reluctant to approach him but she was glad that they talked, their reunion was heartfelt and emotional. Riley never asked why he left and he never told her. Riley never thought her life could be more perfect then it was already but the presence of her loved ones made it possible.
Thank you

Riley walked into the informal dining room of Balymore, her estate in Valtoria, to find the table draped with a red silk cloth, flames flickering from wrought iron candelabras, and gleaming silver cloches gracing the tabletop.
Her mouth fell open and she turned to her husband in name only in astonishment. “What is all this?”
“Oh…ah…” Drake stuttered over his words as his brain spun frantically trying to find the right thing to say that would make his romantic gesture less romantic and not awkward. “I…um…I know you were disappointed that Liam had to cancel your plans for today, so I just wanted to do something to cheer you up.”
Disappointed was an understatement. It was Valentine’s Day and Liam had cancelled their plans. She shouldn’t be surprised. She should be used to it. But it hurt. A good cry and a hot bath had helped, but after a long nap, she’d found herself ravenous. Her quest for food had led her downstairs where she’d followed her nose to find the source of the delicious aroma wafting up to her.
Confusion pinged through her as she took in his demeanor. “What about your plans? Didn’t you have a date?”
“Yeah, well, that fell through.”
“Oh, Drake, I’m so sorry!” Her voice was full of so much sympathy that he felt like an ass for lying.
“It wasn’t anything serious anyway.” The truth was, he had canceled the date when he’d realized Riley would be left home alone. He had only asked the girl out so that he wouldn’t be home when Liam arrived. Not out of jealousy, but fear of discovery. He was sure his best friend could read his love for his supposedly in-name-only wife all over his face.
It was getting harder to fight his feelings for her. The more Liam fucked up and neglected her, the harder it became.
He wasn’t jealous of Liam per se. He loved the guy, and he was fully aware of the myriad web of circumstances that had led to him having to marry for political alliances and not love.
Still.
The effect it had on Riley was the same and it hurt him to watch her suffer. He had agreed to marry her to keep her at court and near Liam. A marriage of convenience. A favor for his friends. An act of service for the two people he loved most in the world.
The problem was that the longer they lived together, the closer they became and the harder he fell. He had tried to fix it, put distance between them, but his stupid, traitorous heart wouldn’t let him move on. And he had tried.
The first year they were together had been so full of turmoil that he had just focused on getting her through it. Once they had moved to Valtoria and she had settled into her new position as Duchess, she had encouraged him to find a relationship of his own.
“You shouldn’t have to suffer just because I am.”
The full truth of the situation was that he had only half-heartedly dated so that she would stop worrying about him and his happiness. Because he would do anything for her. Even date other women. But his heart had never been in it.
Every relationship he had entered had ended before it really began. Two or three dates at most. Several of the women had dumped him citing with confusion that he seemed to actually love his wife.
Everyone on the planet could see that, apparently. Everyone but her.
Because she was too busy letting Liam break her heart over and over.
“Still. I’m sorry your date canceled. I know what that feels like.”
“I’m fine.” He brushed her concern off with a twinge of guilt but telling her that he had been the one to cancel would just open up questions he wasn’t ready to answer. Or more to the point, questions he wasn’t sure she was ready to hear the answers to.
He would confess his feelings right then and there if he thought she returned them. But she was in love with Liam. He knew that.
“Stop worrying about my love life and come eat before it gets cold.”
She inhaled deeply as she stepped toward the table, “It smells so good! What is it?”
“Deep fried chicken and cheese stuffed avocado.” He told her as he pulled her chair out for her.
Her face lit up as she sat. “Really?”
“Yes,” he affirmed as he took his own seat. “I know it’s your favorite.”
“But…how? I gave the kitchen staff the night off!” Neither of them had planned to be home.
“Oh, ah…” a flush spread across his face as he rubbed the back of his neck, “I made it.”
She pulled the cloche off the plate then turned her head to him in bewilderment, “You made this?”
He scoffed while shaking his head. “Don’t act so surprised. I can cook. You know this.”
“I mean yes but this is next level!” The avocados were browned to perfection and served with a beautifully roasted Mediterranean vegetable medley, garlic mashed potatoes, and piping hot Ciabatta bread.
He tried to lighten the mood. “I’m offended that you’re this impressed, Riley. I have mad kitchen skills.”
“I know. I just can’t believe that you did all this for me.” A single tear slid down her cheek.
He leaned forward in concern, wiping the tear away. “Hey, hey, hey! What’s that about?”
“Nothing,” she smiled at him through the wetness pooling in her eyes. “These are happy tears. I didn’t think this day could be salvaged, but you somehow managed it.”
“Yeah, well, what are husbands for?” He gave her a disarming smile as he sat back in his chair and turned his attention to his plate.
She laughed at their shared joke. He always said that when he did something nice for her. It was funny because he wasn’t really her husband.
But he kind of was, wasn’t he?
She dropped her eyes to her plate to cover her sudden flush. He was always doing sweet things like this. He was always there when she needed someone to talk to. Though she would never tell Max or Hana, Drake had become her best friend.
He had left his job as a member of the King’s Guard to move to Valtoria with her. He had been there for her when her grandmother passed away. The last time Liam had stood her up, Drake was ready with her favorite pizza and a movie she’d been wanting to see.
What are husbands for?
It was beginning to feel less and less like a joke because it had become the truth.
How true?
She suspected Drake’s feelings for her. How could she not? She had pushed him to date others. It wasn’t fair to let him waste his life taking care of her when she was in love with another man.
Yet here he was, on Valentine’s Day, taking care of her once again.
She stole a surreptitious glance at him as they ate. Maybe he had deeper feelings for her than she initially suspected.
No, she was imagining things. He was just being a good friend. Because that is what he was. Her friend. And Liam’s.
Liam.
Guilt swirled through her at the thought of her supposed boyfriend. Annoyance followed the guilt. He had stood her up. Again. Why should she feel guilty for anything? He married another woman for the love of God.
Not because he wanted to.
The guilt was back at the reminder of the impossible situation Liam had been placed in, but it was mingled with hurt, embarrassment, and a fair amount of anger.
She knew everyone thought she was an idiot for waiting around on scraps of the king’s time and affection. For uprooting her entire life to chase after him to Cordonia in the first place, for staying even after his rejection, and for continuing to believe that she was a priority to him.
Everyone but Drake.
He never judged her.
She lifted her eyes to his face as he regaled her with tales of Max’s misadventures from when he had tagged along on Drake’s latest fishing trip with Bastien.
“… And then he tripped over the side of the boat and fell in the water!” Drake shook with laughter at the memory.
Riley forced an obligatory smile, but she had missed most of the story, her mind occupied with an entirely new idea.
Her eyes focused on his mouth hoping he didn’t notice the flush on her face as her mind refused to stray away from imagining what his lips would feel like on her neck, on her mouth…other places….
She forced her eyes down to her plate and focused on eating her dinner. The dinner that her husband in allegedly name only had taken the time to prepare with his own two hands.
When the meal was over, she tried to clear the table, but he wouldn’t let her. “No, no, I’ve got this! I’m just going to clear the table and rinse the plates real quick. Why don’t you go pick something to watch? Whatever you want.”
“You sure? You did all this work. The least I can do is let you pick the movie.”
“Nah.” He waved her offer away. “As long as you’re happy, I’m happy.”
A multitude of emotions swirled through her as she watched him walk out of the room with the dishes. If you’re happy, I’m happy. He meant that. He was always saying things like that. He was always going out of his way to do little things to make her happy.
She made her way to the media room and flipped absently through the streaming selections as a million images of Drake fell through her mind. Drake, making her laugh when she was sad. Drake, holding her when she cried. Drake, always keeping himself between her and the reporters. Drake, scrambling eggs in their kitchen at two a.m. because they’d stayed up late watching stand-up comedy specials again.
When had he become such a huge part of her life? Yes, she had married him, but that had been on paper only, so she could stay near Liam.
And yet it was Drake who had attended her grandmother’s funeral with her. It was Drake who had taken care of her when she had the flu last year. And it was always Drake who picked up the pieces after Liam shattered her heart time and time again.
Why was she keeping him at arm’s length?
He showed up in the media room with her favorite blanket, a steaming cup of hot chocolate, and a small box tucked under his arms.
She accepted the cup and the blanket while trying to peer at the box. “What’s that?”
“Oh, this?” He teased, holding it out toward her but up out of her reach.
Her eyes widened as she glimpsed the label. “Are those dark chocolate truffles?”
“Maybe…”
“Drake!” She laughed as she deposited her cup on the end table and made a grab for the promised treat.
He lifted them easily out of her reach with a teasing smile. “What? Did you want these?”
“You know I do!” She tried to pout but the smile tugging her lips upward made that difficult to maintain.
“I don’t know….” He pretended to think deeply about it. “Maybe I should keep these for myself.”
With a joyful laugh, she launched herself off the couch, her fingers touching, but not completely grasping the elusive chocolates. The impact of her body colliding into his, combined with his misstep as he tried to dodge her, sent him toppling backward onto the couch where he landed in a slightly reclined position. Her momentum carried her forward so that she landed on top of him, laying on his chest, looking up into his face.
They were both laughing as their gazes met. A sudden silence descended on them as they stared into each other’s eyes. The smiles faded as lips parted and breath caught.
She moved first, bringing her lips to his. Her kiss was tentative. His response was not.
His arms went around her, the box of truffles dropped and forgotten on the floor. He pulled her tight against him as his tongue deftly took control of her mouth. One hand tangled in her hair as the other slipped under her shirt to caress the smooth skin of her back. A plaintive whimper escaped him as he pressed his rapidly growing hardness up into her.
Riley responded, melting into his embrace, no longer tentative. She pressed herself against him as their kisses became more passionate, almost frantic.
She broke the kiss to gasp for air. “Drake…should we—"
Drake froze for a moment, and then jolted upright, gently moving her off him. “Shit, Riley!” He raked a hand through his hair as he pushed himself back away from her. “I shouldn’t have done that. I’m sorry!”
“What are you sorry for? I kissed you!”
“It was just the heat of the moment.”
“Is that all it was?” She asked him softly.
“Yeah…” He responded unconvincingly.
“Are you sure it wasn’t more than that?”
“Like what?”
“I don’t know…” her fingers twisted the hem of her shirt nervously. “You made this whole romantic dinner…”
“I wanted to cheer you up. Because we’re friends and—"
“You went out of your way to get me my favorite candy.”
“No, I didn’t. I just….” He closed his eyes with a shuddering sigh before pushing through with the lie. “I was already in the store, and I saw it…”
“You’re a bad liar.”
His eyes flew open, and he fixed her a look that was almost pleading. “What do you want from me, Riley?”
“I think the question is, what do you want from me, Drake?” She scooted closer to him taking in the way he watched her warily. Like a rabbit watching a coyote approach, his face full of fear, longing, and a guarded passion.
He swallowed thickly and tried for a normal tone of voice. “The movie…”
Her hand slid up his thigh to the bulge in his pants. “A movie? Is that really what you want right now?”
“Fuck…” he breathed out in defeat as a shudder ran through his body. He grabbed her wrist to stop her but instead of pushing her away as he had intended, he found himself pulling her into him as he leaned forward, and then they were kissing again.
Lips and hands explored bodies and pulled at clothing. His heart thundered in his chest as a small part of his mind screamed at him to stop, to put the brakes on this.
That part was overruled as she pulled her top off and dropped it on the floor next to them. He stopped breathing for a moment as he drank in her naked form. He yanked his own shirt off and dove back in.
Riley arched her back as she gave herself over to the sensations cascading through her body. Drake’s hands on her bare skin were calloused, rough. The friction was a sharp contrast to the smoothness of her bare flesh. It felt good, forbidden, delicious. She shivered as goosebumps erupted along her spine.
His hot lips on her throat sent ribbons of white-hot desire shooting through her and coiling in her center.
She cried out in protest when he withdrew that touch. “Why are you stopping?”
“I…we shouldn’t…”
“Don’t you want me?”
A self-deprecating laugh slipped out of him. “I want you so fucking bad….you have no idea….. but not like this.”
“Like what?”
“You’re upset…vulnerable...”
“I was upset.” She drew his hand back to her body; he didn’t resist as she placed it so it was cupping a pert breast. “That’s not what I’m feeling right now.”
He was struggling mightily to keep his voice even as he gasped for breath. “…don’t want you to regret…”
“I won’t…”
“You’re in love with Liam…”
“I am…” She dropped her hand and pulled back a little. “We can stop if you want.”
“If I want?” His gaze searched hers, unsure exactly what he was looking for.
“Yes, you. I don’t want to stop.”
“But Liam—”
“I don’t want to think about Liam right now, Drake. I don’t want to think about tomorrow or what any of this means. But…” She moved away from him reluctantly. “I understand if you do.”
He instantly regretted the distance between them.
Before he could decide how to proceed, there was a knock at the door.
Drake’s eyes closed as frustration, relief and a smidge of anger pinged through him.
There was only one person it could be this late.
Talk about timing.
He quickly pulled his shirt back on and tossed her blouse to her. “I’ll go answer the door. You might want to fix your hair, it’s a little mussed.”
“Drake—”
“No, it’s okay,” he told her as he pulled her to him and dropped a quick kiss on the top of her head before pushing her gently away. “Go make yourself presentable. I’ll show Liam in.”
“Right.” She redressed and hurried over to the closest mirror to smooth her hair back into place.
Drake combed his fingers through his own hair on his way to the front door. Pulling it open, he greeted his best friend with, “Thought you couldn’t get away, Your Majesty?”
“Some last-minute things came up, but I finally managed to slip away.”
“It’s a little late. Valentine’s Day is pretty much over.”
Liam glanced at his watch as he stepped through the doorway. “Not really. Where is she? And why are you home? I thought you had a date.”
Drake shrugged. “She canceled on me. Sick pet or something.” He was only a little horrified at how easily the lie rolled off his tongue. “Riley’s in the media room. We were just about to watch a movie.”
Liam started down the hall. Looking over his shoulder, he asked, “Are you coming?”
“No. I’m going to turn in early. You two have fun.”
He needed a shower. A cold one.
He sprinted up the stairs, taking them two at a time. He slammed his bedroom door behind him and then leaned back against it, gently banging his head into it several times before muttering to himself, “The fuck did I just do? Stupid, stupid, stupid!”
He shed his clothes as he walked across to the room and into the ensuite. He needed relief.
The water pounded down on him as he wrapped his hand around himself. His head tipped back and his eyes fell closed as he remembered her half-naked form in front of him, the feel of her skin under his fingers, the taste of her lips…..
He groaned out loud as streams of milky whiteness pulsed out of him and splashed onto the tile. He placed both hands on the wall and leaned forward, letting the water run over the back of his head as he watched the detritus of his desire swirl down the drain.
It wasn’t the first time that his ardor for her had landed him in this position, but he knew it was different this time.
They had crossed a line tonight. A line that couldn’t be uncrossed. Even though they hadn’t done the deed, the genie was out of the bottle-- his feelings for her, their obvious sexual attraction to each other, all of it.
He just had no idea what to do about any of it.

Original Post: 05/14/23  at 7:14PM EST.
A/N: As mentioned any chapter of Life of Riley carrying this callsign
Tumblr media
will have a companion chapter in Heroes and Villains.  The chapters will be similar in plot, but different subjects and perpectives will be focused on, the two chapters together tell a complete story from different vantage points.
AN2:  I hadn’t planned on updating LOR yet, but I did get a request from the lovely @queenwalton as she is a fan of this story line, and it’s a late birthday gift.  So happy belated birthday friend, late but I made it. LOL.
Tumblr media
She smiled when she woke up, stretching out her body while still nestled in the soft plush covers and mattress that felt like she was sleeping on clouds.   Opening her eyes, she glanced around the ornately decorated room. Waking up there every morning, always felt like she was in a dream.  She jumped up, from her bed running  over to the balcony, throwing open the doors, as if she expected the gardens below not to be visible.
Tumblr media
But it was, every single morning.  She had been in Cordonia a little more than three weeks; the ending of the second week at the palace where she was participating in Prince Liam’s social season.  She was living her own Cinderella story thanks to the crown prince of Cordonia Liam Rys, who after spending the night with her in New York, asked her to come visit him in Cordonia for a week, and then asked her to stay. Now this was her life.
Tumblr media
Balls and garden parties, and vying for the hand of a Prince that honestly had already made her life different, and she hadn’t even said the words “I do” yet.
Tumblr media
Riley Brooks was not the only one living their own Cinderella story that had Liam to thank.  A young Nicolas Karahalios had everything he owned packed in a duffel bag slung over his shoulder and was standing at the palace gates waiting for entry to live at the palace for the duration of his training. This was different. Previously he was only visiting the palace for training,  now he would be actually staying on site.
“State your full name, and what your business is at the palace.”
“Karahalios, Nicolas A. I’m beginning level two training for the Kingsguard.”
The sentry took out a clip board and scrolled through the names.  Nico sighed in relief when the guard picked up a pen and checked his name off the list.
“You're early. Head through those double doors there to take your photo for your level two identification, and from there, you’ll go to uniforms for your cadet training attire.”
“Thank you.”
“Good luck, kid.”  The guard nodded to him, opening the gate.
“Thank you, Sir!”  Nico slid the strap of his bag up higher on his shoulder and stood in amazement as the palace gates opened for him. He took a deep breath and stepped forward.
Tumblr media
Nico was officially one step closer to becoming a part of the KingsGuard.  Nico stood tall in front of the wall with the Cordonian Crest
Tumblr media
to take his photograph for his badge.
“Look straight ahead.”  The person instructed him.  Nico smiled.
“Don’t smile in this photo.”
“Oh, sorry.”
Nico quickly made his face serious and level once more.
“Your badge will be ready in a few minutes.  Since you were the first one here, it won’t be so long,  you can go to uniforms and get settled in, in the cadet dorm, and  don’t look so shell shocked.  You made it this far.”
“Thank you sir.”
When Nico finally made it to the cadet dorms, he finally decided to call his mother.
“I made it mama! I’m the first one here.”
He panned his phone around the room. The first side of the room housed the bunks for sleeping,  the other side  had furniture,  desks, and a huge wide screen television.
“This is nicer than where you were previously sharing an apartment.”
Tumblr media
“And Mama, when I become a guard, I’ll have my own quarters here, in the palace.”
“You can do it Nico.  I know you can.  Thank you for the money you’ve been sending us.  I was able to get Athena a beautiful dress for graduation.”
“You don’t have to thank me for that, Mama.  It’s what I’m supposed to do.  I’ll be able to take care of you someday.”
“You already do that Nico.  I’m proud of you.”
“Thank you Mama.  I’ve got to go now , some of the other cadets are here now.”
“And you can't be on the phone with your mother, I understand.”  She chuckled softly.
“It's not that. I love you mama.”
“Go make friends. I love you too, my sweet little Dianooúmenos." (Egghead)
Nico laughed,
Tumblr media
 "Goodbye Mama." disconnecting the call.
His mother didn’t realize this was serious, that no one would really be making friends.   People wanted positions in the guard, and everyone had legacy advantages but him.  He was considered to be the outsider that didn’t belong;
Tumblr media
the only one who didn’t treat him that way was Demitri who preferred to be called Dima for short. Dima was the closest person to a friend he had of the cadets.  Nico had already claimed a top bunk for himself. Dima decided on the one next to him. Nico worked twice as hard as the others, and Dima was at his heels.
After Nico had unpacked, he changed into his workout clothes.
“What are you about to do?”
“Take a run around the wall.”  (The Palace perimeter)
“Want company?”
“Sure.”
As they walked out of the dormitory room, Dima looked at him.
“You know, you’re not the only one with something to prove, Nico.”
“Say that again... I don’t think I heard you right the first time.”
Tumblr media
“It’s easy to ride on someone’s coattails, but making your own path is a lot more difficult.  More people should try it.  You and I are really more alike than we are different, you know.”
“Good to know.”
Riley
“Come in Maxwell!”  Riley said when she heard his knock.
Maxwell smiled as he walked through the door.
“You know, we have to stop meeting this way.”
Tumblr media
Maxwell laughed  but the door remained open for Bertrand to walk through.   Riley tried to hide her annoyance.
“Yes Bertrand, what did I do wrong now?”
He looked her over.
“Nothing that I can tell as of yet, but you did just wake up, which already means you have a late start.”
“Still getting used to the time difference.”
“That didn’t matter last night when you were at the dive bar drinking with Drake Walker acting like you’re still a college student.”
“You’re acting like Maxwell wasn’t there too.”
“Little Blossom! Way to throw me under the bus!”
Tumblr media
“I feel like I'm the only one taking this whole arrangement seriously, keeping you two in check is like herding cats.”
“Meow.”
Maxwell chuckled.
“Do not encourage her Maxwell.”
“Don’t encourage me Maxwell. You know how that antagonizes him.”  Riley imitated Bertrand’s voice.   Bertrand eyed her, shaking his head.
“Today’s itinerary is simple.  You will be having lunch in the garden.   All suitors must wear white dresses for the suitor photo shoot.”
“Good thing I’m not surfing the crimson wave this week.”
“The crimson what?  Lady Riley if you are referring to feminine concerns…”
“Or the monthly monster.”
“RAWR!!!!!!”  Maxwell yelled, causing the both of them to break out into fits of giggles.
“You two!!! Stop it! I mean it.”
Maxwell cleared his throat.
“We are very sensitive to those types of things, right Bertrand?  It’s a part of life women must deal with.”
“This is true Lady Riley, if there is anything you need in that department,  I’m sure Maxwell can handle that for you.”
Bertrand straightened his tie taking  a deep breath to continue his conversation.
“Getting back on task, the purpose of the suitor photo shoot is to upload your candid photo with Prince Liam to the Crown’s social media website so the people can be part of the voting for Most Photogenic Couple.  You need to head to your appointment in the boutique.”
“It’s not needed, I have a  dress for the event, Bertrand.”
Tumblr media
Betrand laughed out loud.
“With all due respect Lady Riley, I’ve looked at your social media, and I seriously doubt anything you brought from New York with you, when you were and I quote ‘living my best life YOLO club hopping with my bae’  would hardly suffice for a upscale luncheon with His Royal Highness and the King and Queen. Maxwell, talk some sense into her.”
Tumblr media
Once Bertrand had left, Maxwell peered at Riley.
“Little Blossom….”
“Trust me Maxwell, I have the perfect dress for the garden party.  I just need to get a steamer, and I can steam it myself to remove any wrinkles it has. I promise, I will look amazing.”
“I trust you.”
Even though Liam had offered the Beaumonts funding for Riley’s social season expenses, she always felt if she could avoid spending Liam’s money, she would.  She did have the perfect dress.  It  was snow white and ethereal, gently clung to her curves in the right places, and flowy in all the others. Once steamed and after she had straightened her hair but used her curling iron to create loose waves.  Since it was almost time for her next batch of white roses from Liam to be delivered, she decided to use the current ones to make a garland of roses for her hair, making sure she saved one for something special for Liam. She wanted the whole world to know that she belonged there too.
Tumblr media
Liam was absolutely awestruck when he saw her walking towards the party, heading in her direction, him stopping her at  the garden archway.
The way he stared at her made her feel special and desired.  Liam never gazed at anyone with the level of intention in his eyes.
Tumblr media
After speaking for a few minutes, and the Prince pulling her close to him for a few moments, she continued on to the gardens,  meeting up with Hana first.
“I’m so glad you’re here Lady Riley.”
“You know me,  fashionably late but always in fashion.”  Riley giggled. “I really like your dress.”
“Yours too! Where did you get it?  There was nothing like it in the boutique.”
“It’s actually a dress I brought here from home.”
“It’s really pretty, I would have never known. You’ll have a really pretty picture with Prince Liam, with your dress and hair blowing in the wind.”
“That’s the plan!”
“Shall we go and grab a seat?”
“Lets, my dogs are barking!”
“Okay Penelope.” Hana commented with a giggle.
As they turned  to take the first steps to start heading towards the suitor’s table, Olivia passed in front of Riley stepping on her foot.
Riley could not contain the curse words that tumbled from her mouth.  She was afterall A New Yorker through and through.  She was able to use curse words just as fragrant as a painter could make a picture on canvas come to life.
“And that’s why you should be wearing heels and not dollar store sandals.”
Riley decided not to engage the Scarlet Diva anymore at that moment, but the reckoning was coming.  She had to wait a bit for the crowd to calm down and It was time for lunch, and time for a little payback.
Tumblr media
She decided to survey the serving tables before she enacted her revenge, and let’s be for real, Olivia had it coming.  Riley strategically started heaping food on her plate in a haphazard fashion.  Anything soupy with a sauce made it to her plate, and to drink? The biggest glass she could find was filled to the brim with red wine.
Target acquired.  Riley made her way back to her seat with her plate that was heaping with food and her larger than life glass of red wine, when she passed by Olivia, she feigned slipping dropping the glass of wine over her head.
Direct Hit!
“Whoops!”  Riley exclaimed.
Olivia gasped, jumping up, grabbing her arm.  Riley again slipped as if the ground where the wine had fallen off of Olivia had made the grass slippery and her plate of food somehow left her hands, landing all over Olivia’s dress.
Flawless Victory!
Tumblr media
“My apologies, Duchess Olivia!!!!  It looks like I got your whole dress there. Clumsy me!!!”
She leaned into  Olivia with a smirk.  “Must be those cheap dollar store sandals not providing much traction on the grass.”
The Scarlet Duchess’s face was in fact scarlet and she left the garden party humiliated.
Tumblr media
Riley went back in line and got her actual plate of food, finally making it to her place next to Hana once more.
Hana’s eyes were wide and unblinking.  “I really wasn’t expecting you to do that. But I’m glad you did.  She gets away with so much, I’m glad you stand up to her and for yourself.”
“Don’t let her.  All of you guys could stand up for yourselves too, and not let her get away with the things she does.”
Tumblr media
“That’s just not how it’s done here.”
“Well, it is now.”
Riley glanced across the way, Liam was smiling, shaking his head at her.  Riley smiled back, shrugging her shoulders resulting in Liam’s smile to widen even more.
Photo Op Time
As Liam posed and took pictures with the other suitors, there were some nice photos in the bunch but they all lacked something special.  Riley went last, and as she walked in the Prince’s direction
Tumblr media
his smile brightened and his eyes twinkled. His world stopped.
Tumblr media
“Natural chemistry has  finally entered the chat.”
Riley fell into a deep curtsy looking up at Liam as she held out one of the roses she had clipped.
“A matching rose for you Your Highness for your lapel, for our picture together.”
“That’s a lovely gesture Lady Riley.”
After placing the rose, Riley straightened it.  “Perfect.”
Riley faced the Prince for her photo as all the suitors before had done.  But once their eyes met, there was no denying the electric sexually charged energy of the two together.  Neither heard the snap of the camera until Ana De Luca spoke.
“Wow, that was a great picture, but I don’t think the people are ready for a photo with this much raw heat to it.”
Tumblr media
“I request a copy of that one Ana.”
She nodded.  “You two don’t even need to face each other to create chemistry, it happens on its own.”
Before Ana could actually direct them Liam and Riley fell into a pose different from all the suitors before.
“There it is.   Perfect.  This picture displays " The Royal Romance.”
All the suitors' pictures with Liam were touched up and uploaded to the Crown’s social media website for voting.
Riley’s picture with Liam won by a landslide, meaning she would be going to Greece with Liam; the man she loves. The girl that had come from lowly beginnings being adopted, and losing everything she had to  meeting a kind attractive stranger was now around the world getting stamps on a passport she never thought she would fill, living her best life.

A Bushel and a Peck
Tumblr media
Book: TRR
Pairing: Liam Rys x Riley Brooks-Rys
Word Count: ~3160
Warning: For mature audiences only; TW: major character deaths; mention of cancer, declining health, miscarriages; depiction of an afterlife
A/N: This is a follow-up to Wounded (you don't need to read it to understand this fic). I was asked to "fix it," and I think I did--I mean, I tried... but in a non-traditional way, that still leads to a true HEA. In a way, this is fairly fluffy, but sad fluffy.
A/N 2: Some of these characters, plot points and dialogue belong to our friends at Pixelberry. This was not beta'd; please excuse my errors.
~🖤~
"Can you show us another one?"
"Please, Auntie Ri? Just one more?"
Riley chuckles under her breath before a dry cough robs her titters. "You two aren't tired of those yet?"
Seven-year-old Monie grabs another leather-bound photo album as her five-year-old sister Ginny finishes a snack. The two girls visit with their great-great aunt every Thursday afternoon during the summer months while their mother runs errands.
"How about this one?" Monie passes the scrapbook to Riley, her frail, old hands gripping tightly to the heavy collection of photographs.
"Oh!" Riley squeals, a gravel to her voice, "you picked one of my favorite ones–"
"You say that about every album," Ginny retorts.
"Shhh, your manners!" Monie shakes her finger at her little sister.
Riley smiles warmly. "You're right; I do say that about my photo albums because I just love all of them." She pauses, licking her lined lips. "But this one…" her breath catches in adoration as she opens the front cover. "This one is very special. Here," she pats the empty spaces next to her on the bed, "let me show you."
The nieces eagerly climb on to the bed, sitting close on either side of Riley.
"Who is that?" Ginny exclaims in shock, looking over her aunt's arms in awe. "She looks like a Disney princess!"
Riley curls an arm around her petite body, giving the little girl a gentle kiss in her raven curls.
"He's cute!" Monie croons, "he looks like–like Ken!"
Riley lets out a heartfelt laugh before coughing into a handkerchief. "This," she points to the tall, broad-shouldered man, dressed in full regalia, "is King William the first of Cordonia."
"Whoa," both girls hum in unison, their eyes glittering in awe.
"And this woman?" She points to the bride in the picture, "is me."
Ginny gasps, staring up at Riley. "But, Auntie Ri," Ginny puts a finger to her mouth, "where's your crown? And–and why is your hair a different color–?"
"Ginny!" Monie scolds.
Riley coughs into her hand, clearing her throat. "Those are some good observation skills," she boops Ginny on the nose, the little girl then turning to stick out her tongue at her older sister. "This picture was taken on my wedding day, over seventy years ago."
"Wow, that's older than Daddy," Ginny announces.
"So, that's Uncle Liam?" Monie guesses hopefully, pointing to the blond groom.
Riley hums approvingly. "That is your great-great-uncle Liam."
Monie sighs dreamily looking at the picture. "You're so beautiful, Auntie Ri. Did you love him with all of your heart?"
Riley smiles, a sudden twinkle in her stormy blue eyes as she softly caresses her niece's cheek. "I still do."
After receiving Liam's grim test results for his cancer treatment, the young royal couple was advised by the Council to seek a second opinion. And then a third. But, the conclusion was always the same. Liam was dying.
With the uncertainty of his time left, he made the difficult decision to step down as king. Cordonia was finally stable and strong enough that it could–and it would– thrive with the sudden change.
But, once the choice was made, Liam never looked back to the country he loved so dearly. He couldn't. All he could see now was his wife, the woman that held his heart, the woman who wholly and bravely kept her vows…
… for worse…
… in sickness…
Liam and Riley savored every last moment they had with one another during his final eight weeks, laughing and revisiting old memories of their seven years of marriage. They enjoyed one last private waltz before he was confined to a wheelchair, one last café and baklava at their favorite late night bistro before he was restricted to the palace walls.  They held each other close at night, whispering prayers of love over one another, for just one more day, for just one more chance to say, 'I love you.'
And then he went.
Olivia Nevrakis assumed the throne as queen of Cordonia. Liam's short reign will always be celebrated in history as a time of rebuilding, as a time of peace, as a time that set the small country up for success.
Though not reigning, Riley is still revered as a queen, but shortly after Liam's death, she returned to New York to be near family. She did return to Cordonia for visits, but otherwise, her life resumed back in the states.
She never remarried. And after the four pregnancy losses she had with Liam, Riley had lost all hope and interest in ever becoming a mother.
But even though her heart was shattered, she discovered abundant joy in a different familial role: being an aunt.  After the first generation of nieces and nephews had grown up, Riley quickly became the cornerstone of the Brooks family, highly regarded and respected. And loved. She was known as the fun aunt, the one with the best stories, the one that remembered birthdays and sporting events and recitals. She made sure every child in the family felt seen, heard, and above all else, loved.
Lost in the memories of her former life, a knock on the door interrupts Riley from her daydream. "Come in," she calls out, her soft timbre strained and gruff.
A young woman with dark hair bounds into the room, bracing her heavily pregnant belly. Monie and Ginny jump up from the bed, running to her with arms wide open. "Mommy!" They crash into her legs, nuzzling sweetly into their mother's sides.
"Hey, sweet girls," she croons, before she looks towards Riley, raising an eyebrow. "At least… I hope you two were sweet girls for Auntie Ri today."
"Oh, Jamie," Riley titters. "You know they are always perfect angels with me." She winks at her great-niece, hugging her daughters.
"Girls, Daddy is right outside. Can you go hold his hand? I need to talk with Auntie Ri for just a minute."
Nodding their heads, the two young girls run back to their great-great aunt to give her hugs and kisses goodbye.
"I love you–" Riley singsongs, giving them a knowing grin. Monie and Ginny chime in with her as they all sing in unison, "a bushel and a peck."
The girls raced to the hallway, instantly meeting their father. Jamie closes the door, letting out a sigh before turning her sad, glistening attention to her great aunt.
"Aunti Ri," a lump grows in her throat, "the doctors said you're refusing your heart cath."
Riley straightens out her posture, firming her jaw. "That's right, dear."
"Why?" The young woman whispers, wiping away a tear.
"Because what difference will it make?" Riley carefully grabs her walker, slowly making her way to her niece. "I'm almost 98-years-old, baby girl," she grabs Jamie's hand, comforting her as she watches her begin to cry. "It's time. I'm… ready to go home."
"But," Jamie exhales a trembling sob, "what about us? What if I'm not ready for you to go?"
Riley grins endearingly, "I know that feeling all too well." She gently rubs her thumb over her niece's fingers. "Did I ever tell you what my Liam said to me the night before he passed?"
Jamie dabs away her tears, shaking her head.
"We would stay up late into the night, dreaming of the life we could've had if it wasn't for, y'know, the cancer. But," Riley licks her lips, "that night. Our last night… Liam was quiet. There were no more what ifs or discussions of what could have been. Instead, he just smiled. Completely at peace." Riley's eyes flutter as she recounts the distant memory. "He simply said, 'I'm ready, love.'" Riley shrugs.
"Do you think he knew?" Jamie sniffles, "you think he was ready to die?"
"I think," Riley removes her bifocals, letting them hang around her neck as she draws closer to her niece. "He was ready to live again. He was ready for the next adventure that life has to offer."
Jamie tilts her head. "What's that?"
"Eternity," Riley chuckles, gripping tight to her great niece's arm. "He's been waiting for me a long time." She sighs with contempt, "You kids?" She chuckles to herself, "you are so strong. You all are. My presence isn't what makes you strong. It was our time together… and sure, you'll be sad. But this life?" Riley shakes her head. "It's not the end of the road. And as for me… I'm ready to live again. I'm ready for my next adventure." A tear rolls down Riley's cheek as she smiles brightly. "I'm ready for eternity."
Jamie helped Riley into her favorite rocking chair for her afternoon nap before dinner, covering her up with her favorite knitted blankets. The women hugged each other close before they finally said their goodbyes.
Turning to leave, Riley calls Jamie back to her side.
"Baby girl?" Riley titters before she begins to sing. "I love you–"
Jamie lets out a heartfelt laugh, wiping away the last of her tears. "--a bushel and a peck."
----------
Warm beams of light crawl across Riley's skin, stirring her awake from her deep slumber. She sits up, rubbing the remainder of her sleepiness from her eyes when suddenly, she freezes. She blinks a few more times as confusion--and fear–billows through her veins.
Her room. It's different. The space was large, filled with the gorgeous scent of pink Cordonian hydrangeas, fresh picked rubies… and something else. Someone else.
Riley takes in the soft gray hue of the walls, accented by the navy toile window treatments. Everything beautiful in its place, everything perfectly neat, everything… oddly familiar. Like a distant dream, like the memory of another life.
Cautiously taking in her new surroundings, Riley begins to mindlessly fumble with the intricate stitching of a throw pillow, the threading comforting to her fingertips.
Then she stops.
She holds up her hand, her ocean eyes growing wide with wonder. Her skin. It is pure like the first Lythikos snow. No blemishes, no creases. It's perfectly smooth, perfectly pink and supple. Speechless, she reaches up to touch her own flushed cheeks.
And she gasps, the lines of the past century remarkably gone. Her face. It feels impossibly soft. Like velvet.
A thread of panic unfurls in her stomach as she throws the covers off her body, retreating to the en suite bathroom. Riley has had dreams like this before–many times, actually. Fantasies about her younger years, about her life in Cordonia, about the precious moments she had with the love of her life.
But there was something strange about this one. Something life-like. Something real.
Riley stares at her reflection in the mirror, her hands curiously exploring her body. Espresso tresses. Slender slopes of her waist and hips. She swivels to the left, then to the right, chuckling at her age-rewind. If she could only tell herself then what she knows now…
As she pretends to pin her hair up in different regal styles, the whisper of a melody floats into the room. Startled by the accompaniment, Riley twirls around, listening more intently. She takes a step forward. Then another. She cranes her neck towards the bedroom door, her only exit.
It was a guitar. Someone was playing it.
Riley carefully opens the door, and pads softly down the hallways, through the kitchen and to the foyer. She presses her ear to the front door of her quarters, the music crescendoing through the air.
Swiftly exiting the quarters, Riley tiptoes through the halls down to the main corridor, following the strumming of notes. She finally comes to a set of double doors, one of them sitting ajar as a heavenly light pours out.
Placing her fingertips on the ornate wood,  the vibrations of each chord stirs the wings of butterflies in her heart. Taking a deep breath, she pokes her head into the room.
A woman–an older woman–sits casually in a chair, her fingers meticulously plucking the strings. Riley focuses on her kind face and soft features. Her wavy blonde hair is pinned back into a low bun, exposing the brilliance of her crystal blue eyes.  Though expressionless as she played, the curves of her rosy lips are pleasant, friendly.
"Oh!" She exclaims, noticing Riley. "You're finally here!"
Riley's eyes grow into saucers. Does she know this woman?
She watches the older woman set down her instrument before bounding towards where Riley stood.
"We have been waiting for you," she smiles sincerely, taking Riley's hands endearingly into her own. “We have so much to talk about–”
"Grandma!"
"Oh!" She lets out a hearty laugh as four small children file into the room, dashing quickly to her side. She bends over and greets each one with a tight hug and a kiss. "How are my darlings?"
Riley smiles at the interaction, admiring the love this woman has for her beautiful grandchildren.  She then casually surveys the room; are their parents nearby?
She looks back to the family when suddenly, she notices one of the blond boys with striking eyes like his grandmother is gazing up at her. He doesn't say a word, but his stare is friendly, warm and inviting.
Riley climbs onto her knees, her attention not leaving him as she soaks in his handsome mannerisms. Even for such a young boy, his hair was perfectly combed to the side. His collared shirt was properly tucked in, and he politely held his hands together behind his back. So precious, so refined and orderly, just like…
Riley gasps as a sea of tears gather in her eyes. She reaches out, combing her fingers through his short hair before stroking his freckled cheeks. And she lets out a silent whimper. "William?"
The young boy giggles, turning back to his brothers and sister. "I told you she would remember me!"
Wrapping her arms around his frame, Riley pulls him to herself tightly, his arms securing around her neck. "My–my baby boy…" One-by-one, each child approaches slowly, excitement written on their chubby faces. Riley caresses the cheeks of two more little boys: another blond and one with dark brunette hair like hers. "Henry?" She sniffles as he nods, chewing coyly on his fingernail. "Alexander?" The two boys join the embrace with their brother William, rivers cascading down their mother's face as she peppers them with kisses.
"Do you remember me, Mommy?"
Riley glances up to see a little girl with stormy blue eyes, her espresso waves tamed into two braids. Though she wore a pretty pink jumper with bows, she was wearing a pair of muddy galoshes.
That's my girl.
"My Eleanor," Riley whispers, extending her hand to join the fold with her brothers. She presses her lips into the little girl's temple as she holds her close. "Oh, my baby, I love you," she squeezes her grip around the boys, "all of you!" She snickers, "I love you."
"A bushel and a peck," Alexander pipes up. "Right, Mommy?"
New warm tears pour down Riley's reddened face as she lovingly dotes on her children. "That's right, baby," her breath quivers, "that's right. But… how did you–?"
"You used to sing that to me at night–"
"Me, too!" Henry exclaims while William nods in agreement.
"You and Daddy told me that over and over," Eleanor giggles, "until I woke up in Grandma's arms!"
Riley freezes as she peers up at the older woman, now overcome with her own tears of joy. She slowly stands, her lips parting in awe. "Your majesty?"
"I haven't been called that in over 85 years!" The older woman shares a contagious laugh, “But, how about we just stick with ‘Eleanor’ for now?”  She quickly reaches out, pulling her daughter-in-law into a snug embrace. Riley quickly slinks her arms around the woman, holding her close as they both weep silently together. "You," Eleanor whispers, "were more than I ever dreamed for my Liam. You were–You are everything he deserves… and more.”
Riley suddenly lets go, staring into her mother-in-law's eyes. She bites her lip as she tilts her head curiously, almost in disbelief.
"Where… where is he?" She sobs into a smile.
Eleanor tucks Riley's hair behind her ear before resting her hands on her daughter-in-law's shoulders. "Where do you think, my dear?"
Riley stumbles backwards as a bright smile crawls across her face. She finally turns around, pushing through the double doors and out into the main corridor. After descending the grand staircase, she exits into the pure daylight, a gentle breeze greeting her.  She glances around the grounds, the fresh greenery invigorating her senses. Without thinking, she abruptly takes off down the steps, sprinting through the bushes, across the courtyard and around the fountain. Finally, she reaches a thick hedge of beautifully twisted vines and leaves. The garden maze.
Riley closes her eyes as she catches her breath, another gust of wind tangling in her hair. A tug on her heart beckons for her to keep going as she fumbles her way into the maze. She frantically runs around the corners and through the turns, her hands outstretched to catch her if she trips.
Making it around the last twist of the path, Riley spills into the center of the maze: the garden. Her eyes frantically search, scouring through the area, looking behind lattice work and dense pieces of foliage until finally, she gasps.
Around the corner along a private path, a tall, strongly-built man slowly paces next to a swing, his hands casually in his pockets. With his short locks of blond ruffling in the breeze, he glances at his watch before instantly feeling a pair of stormy blue eyes fixed on him.
As he peers over his shoulder, a smile tugs at his lips, his breath escaping his lungs as his eyes begin to shimmer.
"There you are, my love."
With reckless abandon, Riley dashes down the dirt path, gasping for air between her wails of disbelief. Leaping into the air, Liam's strong arms instantly catch her, pulling her close to his broad chest. His large hand cradles her intimately as his other fists tightly into her careless waves. She locks her legs around his waist, her fingers combing hungrily into his hair as she presses her face into his neck.
And she weeps, deep groans escaping her chest as her body shudders in his arms.
"Shhh," Liam gently croons, warm tears coursing down his chiseled cheeks. "It's alright now. Everything is alright now."
Quieting down, Riley looks up to her husband, his lips immediately finding hers. "Is this real?" She pants, claiming his mouth again. "Please tell me this is real life, baby."
Liam pulls her into another deep kiss, his tongue gently caressing her lips apart as he elicits soft mewls from her mouth. He pulls back, his crystal blue gaze meeting her hopeful, tear-stained eyes. "It's better, love." He pushes a wayward tendril from her face. "This is eternity."

Okay. Soooooooooooooooooooooooo, I've been working on this for a while, and I'm finally going to start posting it. I've never posted anything, anywhere, ever, at all, at any point in time in my life, so to say this is nerve wrecking would be an understatement. And it's not even the actual chapter yet. 🤣🤣🤣
ANYWHO, I'm going to post the title and summary of this fic. I don't have a tag list or anything like that, but I can make one if enough people show interest 🙃 (and I can navigate my way through that lolololol.)
And can I give the biggest shout out to @ao719, who has literally talked me through this entire process and continuously reassured me that this is a good idea 🤣🥲😍😘
Tumblr media
